Get to know Ilha do Mel (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Ilha do Mel.

Ilha do Mel is one of the most beautiful places in Brazil and is visited by many tourists year round. The island has several establishments where you can stay -- among them campsites, hotels, and hostels in Ilha do Mel. The crossing to the island is extremely safe and is held daily, at various times, from the port of Pontal do Sul, the city nearest to the island that integrates the coast of Paraná. This trip usually lasts about forty-five minutes, but it is a beautiful ride, because you have the opportunity to see a good part of the coast from another angle.

The island also has several establishments where you can have your meals or buy gifts. Some of these establishments accept cards (debit and credit), but most of them work only with paper money. So it's good to remember to be sure you have enough cash ahead of arriving there to avoid problems.

On the island you will find several beaches, with more than two thousand acres that are part of the island, with a good portion of that area with trails. Among the most popular attractions are the Farol das Conchas -- a disabled lighthouse that guided ships to the port of Paranaguá in the past -- and the Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, a fort built to protect the island from the arrival of enemies. Each of these points is at one side of the island.

When you buy your ticket for the boat you can choose the beach at which you want to arrive, so you must know well which side of the island you want to visit to pick the nearest beach. To know the whole island, you'll need about two days, so you can take your time. The trails are strenuous to be done all in one day, but you can explore a lot of places in only one day.

The island is also a good place for surfing. For those who prefer to just relax on one of several beautiful, sandy beaches on the island, go during the summer when the water is warmer.
