This city lends itself to just sitting around, drinking by the harbor, or sitting on a bench at any of the small squares. Though the city is laid-back and bicycles fill the tree-lined vennels, the port is busy and traders are buying and selling millions of diamonds. Go down the seemingly endless pedestrian tunnel under the harbor, or to the underground passageways in the city center. The town also brings up its share of artists and designers, and offers excellent clothes shopping in small shops. The local tourist info has maps target at young people, that feature commentary on things to do, in a charming tone.
The hostels in Antwerp are primarily located outside of the center but along various tram lines. Public transportation is cheap if you by a multi-ride card for tern rides -– it's less than paying the single fare. The Antwerp hostel selection is sufficient, but be sure to check the public transport connection before you arrive.
Though the city isn't crime-ridden, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings when returning to your Antwerp hostel at night, as some are located in areas where few people are around at night. If you are traveling solo and think you might fancy sampling a bit much of the local brew, do put some extra thought into the location.
