Get to know Innsbruck (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Innsbruck.

Innsbruck is a bustling provincial capital nestled in the Austrian Alps. Innsbruck has stunning views of the Alps, the literal backdrop of this city. The city center has major shopping, stretching north from the train station. The adjoining old-town offers a classic historic core. Innsbruck's universities are also notable. There's a young flair to this city, especially during the semester.

This city is the center of Tyrol, a region which braces the Alps across the Austrian and Italian boarders, ending at the Dolomites to the south. Innsbruck as Tyrol's main city is the transportation hub and hence extremely easily accessible. There are trains from Germany, all of Austria, Switzerland, and Italy constantly arriving and departing. The major north-south motorway also passes Innsbruck. Getting in by plane is also easy, especially in winter, when flying at the local airport picks up.

Surprisingly, Innsbruck is relatively flat and bicycling is popular. Additionally a fleet of flashy new trams and buses roll you around town, in case you're heading out of the center, or just aren't up to walking too far. Driving is a comfortable option as well -- just avoid rush hour.

There are a few hostels in Innsbruck that range in price and size, all aimed at the short-stay traveler -- they are suitable for most. Meeting other travelers or making local friends isn't always easy, though there is plenty of nightlife in town. Ask around -- the student crowd tends to be in the loop. There is a decent arts scene, so you can find diverse theater, music, and arts events nightly.
