Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Castilla-La Mancha

Castilla-La Mancha is a province with very rich history, but it is a no-brainer that the best city to visit is Toledo. In fact, it is surely one of the most fascinating and charismatic cities in Spain. The city of three cultures – Christian, Jewish and Arab – is an outstanding mix of different civilizations, with an Old Town almost untouched by time. Most people go for a day trip, as Toledo is only seventy kilometers from Madrid, and there are buses every thirty minutes. There are a lot of free concerts and performances in the evening, plus a rich cultural program. The best time to visit is Sunday, when many museums have free admission.

Other interesting cities worth visiting are Albacete, which has very well preserved architecture from the middle of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century in the Old Town, and Cuenca, with its Historic Walled Town, Bridge of Saint Paul, and the Cuenca Cathedral. Yeste, with the Castle of Yeste from the 12th century, the convent of San Francisco, and many others is also a good place to visit.

Castilla-La Mancha is also famous for Don Quixote de la Mancha, and there are many tourist routes which connect different villages and towns. You can take a bike or even walk, but some distances can be twenty to twenty kilometers. Summer in Castilla-La Mancha is scorching, so it is not the best season to visit the region.

The situation with hostels in Castilla-La Mancha is far from great. Toledo, as its major tourist center, has a large number of hostels that operate all year long, and it is the only exception in the region. You will have no problem booking a good hostel there. However, there are barely any hostels in other cities, and you can struggle to find a hostel to stay. There are a few hostels in Cuenca, Albacete, and Yeste, and a lot of them do not operate all year long. It is wise to book them in advance and not to go and check on the spot if a particular hostel is open or not. Hostel staff is very friendly in all cities in Castilla-La Mancha, and most of them speak reasonable English in Toledo, as locals are used to having thousands of tourists every day. Nevertheless, you can hardly expect to meet staff who can speak English in other cities.
