Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Timor

Timor is a region in Indonesia. Known as West Timor to differentiate it from the country known as East Timor, this is an area famed for its highly diverse mix of ethnicities and cultures. The landscape is also one of the most unique in this part of the world – it is hot, humid, and has several large rivers.

Timor has less jungle than the rest of South East Asia and features plains, crags, and meadows with woodlands in-between.

The region is known for the many hostels and other forms of accommodation available. You are sure to find some affordable hostels near Kupang, Soe and Atambua.

In addition, there are many other hotels and homesteads available. However, you are unlikely to find many reasonably-priced hostels outside these areas. While in some of the villages, the locals may open their homes to travellers, you will need a local guide to sort out pricing for you.

A dazzling array of crops can be found around the region with its many farmers. The local tribes grow maize, peanuts and cashew. Most of the religious practices in the area are closely related to the agricultural nature of the local people.

While most of the population in the area is Christian as a result of Portuguese and Dutch colonisation in the more recent past, some communities continue to incorporate ancient rituals into their worship.

The area is also famous for the many deserted beaches, along with the smaller islands around the main region. Kupang Harbor, Semau, and the Kera Islands are all prime choices for you to engage in water sports like swimming and snorkelling.

If you want to go surfing, fishing, or diving, you can check out Rote and Savu islands, both of which can be reached by ferry.

If you are a fan of natural beauty, check out the Oenesu Waterfall, located about seventeen kilometres south of the city of Kupang. It is a waterfall with three tiers and is a major hotspot for visitors to the region.

A similar attraction that is less wet is the Crystal Cave. This is a limestone cave with a pool of clear, still, water in the centre that can only be reached with some effort.

One of the final destinations you could check out is Camplong Forest, a tourist park located at the foot of Mt. Fatuleu. It also features a farm for exotic animals such as crocodiles and pythons.
