Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Assam

Assam is one of the Seven Sister States of northeastern India which are connected to the rest of the country via a 14-mile strip of land called the Siliguri Corridor. Assam is known for its tea, silk, and the first drilled oil well of Asia. It provides up to twenty-five percent of India's petroleum. Its capital is Dispur while its largest city is Guwahati.

Assam's Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, help attract ecotourism. The state is one of the last habitats for the Asian Elephant. It is also credited with helping animals like the one-horned Indian Rhinoceros, the Wild Water Buffalo, and the Pygmy Hog avoid extinction. All these distinctions help attract wildlife tourism.

The ideal time to travel here is from October to March due to the mild climate. In January you can share in the Bhopal Bihu Festival as well as the Harvest Festival. Upon arriving at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (also known as Guwahati Airport) in Borjhar, Guwahati, you will be in the perfect place to find Assam hostels. If you cannot locate a hostel, there are many hostel-type, economical accommodations in Guwahati. Look for lodgings called "Palace," "Inn," or "Regency" if you are looking for low-budget options. For $10 to $25 per night for a room for two, you can expect an average of 3 1/2-star quality, including clean rooms, friendly staff, free (mediocre) wifi, and good in-house food options. Be sure to bring some cash since many venues do not accept credit cards. Once you are settled in to your hostel, you can begin your sight-seeing.

From Guwahati, you can easily reach the famous Kaziranga National Park. This sanctuary is open from the first day of November until the last day of April. Two thirds of the One-Horned Indian Rhinoceros reside here. Other animals you can visit are elephants, tigers, swamp deer, wild buffalos, as well as birds and reptiles. There is also a variety of beautiful flowers and plants. You can even go on different safaris. The photo opportunities are ideal for avid nature lovers and photographers alike.

Another exciting point for your itinerary is the Umananda Temple. From your Assam hostel, ask where you can catch the ferry to Peacock Island. You can take a government ferry for about 30 cents, or you can take a private ferry for double or ten-fold that price. The short boat ride will take you over the Brahmaputra River to the smallest river-island in the world. Be prepared to ascend hundreds of steps to reach the beautiful temple atop mount Bhasmacala. Once up there, enjoy the view as well as the intricate beauty of the interior of the temple which was built by King Gadadhar Singha. Fortunately, you are permitted to take photos even within the shrine. You will see amazing creations, including the idols Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Hanuman.
