Outstanding in Every Way
I spend about eight months of the year in hostels all over the world. Most are ok to good, some should be closed down and a few stand out from the rest as being in a league of their own. Travellers House is one of those few -- it just manages to get everything right. All the positive things said by others are absolutely correct. I'd like to pay tribute to Joao and all the staff who work there. Rarely does a hostel manage to find staff who are all consistently outstanding in their work, friendly, charming and knowledgeable, from those on reception, to the guys doing the evening events, the housekeepers and the delightful ladies who prepare breakfast to order every morning. A particular highlight of the hostel is the programme of evening social events. Many hostels organise these, but I know of no other hostel that does it so well and relates the events to the culture of the country and city. The wine tasting night and the brilliant chorizo/sausage sampling evening done in-house are brilliant ways of bringing people together in the hostel whilst providing insights into both areas. The Fado night can only be done in Lisbon and the hostel finds exemplar bars to visit. Not content with just taking people out for the night, the hostel organises a pre-event social before leaving, so that people can get to know each other before they set out -- a master stroke of social organisation. If you want to know anything about the city the staff will know or find out for you. If you are planning a tour of Portugal you will have amazing help at hand from people who know the country really well and will sit down with you and a map and come up with great ideas for places to visit you may never have known existed. There are a couple of places around the world I return to not only for the city but primarily for the hostel. Lisbon is a great city, worth a visit any time, but I'd go again in order to stay at Travellers House.
IT HAS IT ALL
The greatness of this hostel started even before getting here. Joao, one of the guys of the reception, answered all my doubts by email, and explain me not only how to get there, but also which were the possible transports and why to pick each. Once I arrived to the airport taking the AEROBUS was super easy, and it took me about 20 minutes (which I used to see the great things on my way, such as campo pequeno, av. de libertade and more) and got down in Praca do comercio, 3 blocks away there was the hostel sited in gorgeous RUA AUGUSTA. This hostel has it ALL. Included in the price -- Good breakfast with toasts and egg or pancakes, Padlock for REALLY BIG locker, safe box INSIDE EACH LOCKER, linen, towels, you can use their ipads and laptops for free as well!!! last but not least free coffee, tea and cocoa 24hrs and IT'S A GREAT PRICE. Security -- The place is in a really safety place, but also, they have 24 hrs reception with camera at the door, and each door has magnetic card (First to get to the Rooms Area and for the room as well). Also, as mentioned before, has huge lockers for each bed, below the beds and safe box inside it!! don't need to worry THEY WILL GIVE YOU THE PADLOCK. Accommodations -- Huge and always clean common area, good kitchen for guests, REALLY CLEAN bathrooms, big rooms and also clean, it has a cozy living room to chill and meet other people, a TV ROOM, PC ROOM, dining area and a balcony for smokers. They have a little fridge with coca cola, water, iced tea and beer for sale 1.5 euros everything, that you can pay when you're leaving. Activities and really helpful staff -- All members of the staff are really nice and always there to help you. Joao help me plan my days with maps and very useful info. Back at night, there was always something to do and new people to meet in the common areas. Night walking tour to alfama including liqueur tasting, FADO and going out, happy hour 2.5 euros as much beer as you can take, bar hopping, and PETISCOS NIGHT, tasting the flavors of portugal, and sharing some wine with new friends. IF YOU ARE COMING TO LISBON, YOU NEED TO GO HERE, IT'S THE BEST ONE IN THE CITY.
This was by far the best hostel I've ever stayed at! If you come to Lisbon you have to stay here. The rooms are very clean with comfy beds, great clean showers/bathrooms and the atmosphere is the best part. They have a few common rooms with computers to use, a tv, DVDs and a great eating area. Every night they have things on that you can do such as walks around bairro alto, fado, dinners and all you can drink nights for 2.50 euro! The guy who works here Jheaul is so so lovely! He is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and shows you an amazing time out. So all in all I've had an amazing time here and I really didn't want to leave!!!! You must stay here!
This is the best hostel ever! Staff is amazingly helpful and extremely kind. The position is great and not too noisy. Book ahead otherwise you won't be able to get a bed!
Perfect location, friendly helpful staff, amazing breakfast, clean, and safe. I was there for two weeks in June 2007. I would give it five Stars except for noise from my room right on street. Just bought earplugs. Easy enough to get on internet, kitchen available if you want to cook, store food, reasonably priced laundry service, staff always pleasant and helpful. Oh, and huge lockers under the bunk beds for storage, bring your own lock. Male bath with construction while I was there and completed, so sharing a while, but hot water always.
Just landed home there, we were out to watch celtic vs. benfica. Lisbon is brilliant and travellers house is perfect, right in the centre of everything worthwhile. happy hour is unreal, 1.50 euro to empty the keg. The staff are brilliant!
Fantastic! Best Hostel I Have Ever Stayed In!
I can't say enough good things about this hostel. The staff there is absolutely fantastic. Everyone was so friendly! They go out of their way to help you with your travel and with having fun. I loved the fact that they gave you free sheets, towels, and eggs for breakfast. I have never stayed in a hostel that served a hot breakfast like they do. The living area is very chill and cozy. You can watch TV, use the internet or cook yourself dinner. I stayed in a four-bed room and it was perfect. I met some girls here that I ended traveling with for the next four days. They even give you a free lock to use while you're here, and you can fit your entire luggage in the locker that is under the bed. You will not regret it. Location is perfect, right on a street with lots of shops and outdoor cafes.
