The Dictionary Hostel Reviews

The Dictionary Hostel is perfect for people that want a quality place to stay in London, in a decent location, with a free breakfast.

The Location

It is located in East London, a nine-minute walk to Old Street Station (tube and overground), an eight-minute walk to Shoreditch High Street (overground), or a six-minute walk to Hoxton Station (overground). These stations allow you to travel quickly into central London if you're an intrepid tourist wanting to see the plethora of attractions London has to offer. However, you do not have to travel so far to see closer attractions like Brick Lane (a thirteen-minute walk), Spitalfields Market (a fifteen-minute walk), and the Barbican Theatre or Cinema (a twenty-minute walk).

You also don't need to travel far to dine in one of the local restaurants or drink in one of the local funky bars. Fancy a pizza? Amici Miei 2 Go will more than meet your expectations and is only six doorsteps away. If your taste buds are salivating for a kebab at 3 a.m., Kebab Zero is there for you and is even closer! If it's a bar you're after, Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes is a hipster cafe/bar that used to be two eighties bag and shoe wholesalers that have signs hanging on the building's original shopfront. If you're a beer connoisseur, then Bar Prague could be right up your street as it serves a collection of Prague beers. If you want to have a laugh, The Cornershop Bar has an open mic comedy night, after which you can have a jig on the dance floor. Sports fan? Bar Kick is the place to go; it has many large screens showing sports, table football, with various sports memorabilia to give it that unique sports bar look.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Its square-metre size is huge, so it's unlikely there won't be a spare bed for you. The rooms have the bedding ready for you on arrival, with a lockable cage underneath the bunk beds in which to keep your possessions safe. If you forgot to bring a lock, they have some available to buy at reception. They have plug sockets close to the bed but no personal lights. Each room has a private toilet and shower, a convenience that you'll appreciate, although a full room of sixteen people could lead to queues for these facilities. They do have toilets outside the rooms, though, and perhaps showers too, but we didn't see them.

Common Spaces

The reception room is fairly large and has a common space with tables and chairs in which to socialise or relax. Downstairs is the kitchen that also has tables, chairs, a large TV, and a free breakfast between 8 and 10 a.m. Breakfast is simple but it's more than enough; it includes bread that you can toast, butter, jam, peanut butter, cornflakes, oats, tea, and coffee. We could not see a microwave, which is a shame as we wanted to warm up the oats. However, there are three fridges in which you can keep food and drink, plus various kitchen paraphernalia allowing you to cook meals.

Summary

This is a hostel we would highly recommend because it has everything you need when seeking a cheap place to stay in London.

Location and Contact

Location

• Old Street - 10 minute walk. From Old Street Station, take EXIT 2. Once you are out of the station continue walking along Old Street. After 2 blocks the road forks. Keep left and make sure you are still on Old Street. Walk for about 3 more blocks until you go under the railway bridge, turn left onto Kingsland Road. We are on your right hand side.
• Liverpool Street Station - exit the station and turn left up Bishopsgate Rd (the main road). Head to bus stop E (opposite Boots and the Dirty Dicks pub) and take either the 26, 48, 149, or 242 to Shoreditch Church. You can ask the bus driver to announce it for you and there should be electronic screens with the stop names too.
• From Shoreditch High Street Station, come out of the station, turn left and then left onto Bethnal green Road and right onto Shoreditch High Street. Walk along until you go past Shoreditch Church (right hand side after about 6 minutes). Carry on straight and cross the road, and walk another 30m. We're on your right hand side at 10-20 Kingsland Road.
