Great location and staff
Had a great stay at Hostel Strowis, staff were really friendly and helpful. The building itself has a lot of character and is on a quiet street but in a great spot to explore Utrecht. Really enjoyed the bike rentals right from the hostel. Only negative was the heat, we found it hard to sleep because the rooms were so hot at night. But it wouldn't stop me from going back!

Very good but scrap the curfew!
Strowis is definitely a very good hostel. First thing when I arrived and made a booking was I was offered a very welcome coffee while I was checked-in by the friendly staff. The rooms are a bit old-fashioned but spacious with comfortable bunks and plenty of good showers nearby. The kitchen is good and the common area very attractive, with plenty of space but only one computer. However the staff do keep an eye to make sure that no one person hogs the terminal for too long. Small, continental type breakfast is €3 but no free tea or coffee available in the kitchen. Also, extra charge of €1.25 for sheets. However, there is a curfew at 2am (3am on Friday/Saturday) which is unnecessary, nowadays. Stated reason is not to wake other guests but one of the guys in my room had a coughing fit and kept us all awake, anyway! I get the impression that the guys that run the place are very idealistic and well-intentioned but have to deduct one star for the annoying curfew!
Nazi staff and dirty. Don't go there.
They kicked me out and scared with the police, because I asked for a hot water. In this place you are said that you'll be able to use a kitchen, but next day you find out that it's closed till 12.30! If you gets up at 7, there is only 5 hours to wait for a coffee or ... you can buy a breakfast at the bar -- expensive and from old food 0- for 7euros!I had my coffee, sugar and milk, when I said I don't like the idea of paying for the cup of hot water, they said I'm impolite and kick me out. This people are crazy, scared me with the police because of water??? I used to work in the hotel and I know how can people be impolite, in this case I've just said my opinion about the place and it was my last.

A nice place to stay
Stayed in it during Summer Darkness festival this year. Overall -- very good hostel: friendly staff, comfortable beds, close to center of the city, free internet. had a great time in it!
Nice place and friendly staff
I thought Strowis was one of the best places I stayed at, it has a nice kitchen, an excellent back garden which is good for meeting people and bunch of games, The staff were all friendly, except maybe one, the rooms/beds are very basic but the price for a dorm bed was reasonable for what you got. Also had lockers downstairs and bikes to rent for 7euro's a day.
Stayed an extra night!
absolutely awesome staff -- very helpful in accommodations. reasonably priced. awesome atmosphere, great coffee, loved the fact that they have a communal kitchen and fridge to put groceries in as well as cook. Great garden space for getting to know people or just reading or smoking. I had a great time here. Best in all of Holland.
Very friendly staff, but...
Positive things first. Strowis is situated in a nice, quiet small street, at a pleasant fifteen minutes' walk from the central station and in a formerly squatted seventeenth century building. Utrecht itself is a beautiful laid-back place, the hostel location is good, and you can easily reach the city center and most places of interest within a walk of twenty minutes. I found the Strowis staff to be very kind and helpful, they really make you feel welcome and will assist you with practically everything they can. Less pleasant is the value you get for your money -- at least if you book a single room. I paid 67 € (including breakfast) per night for a small, depressing room under the roof that only had two tiny roof windows (absolutely no view at all, but at least a little daylight). Apart from a very small washbasin, there were absolutely no amenities in the room -- only raw walls and ceiling, linoleum on the floor (very cold on your feet in early December), a bed, a bedside locker, a chair, and that was it. The (shared) shower is of the annoying kind where you have to push a button in order to release a certain amount of water -- forcing people to be conscious about their water consumption is not a bad idea, but this system really sucks. It took ages for the water to get warm, and the shower room was certainly not the most pleasant spot to wait in (shivering) for the water to get acceptably warm. In summer this might be acceptable, in December is definitely was no fun. Worst of all, if you expect to be able to get an undisturbed night of sleep, you better go and find yourself some other place. The rooms are the opposite of sound proof, in fact you can hear every single f***ing word that is spoken (or even whispered) in the rooms next to you or in the hall. If you happen to end up on the same floor as juvenile party folks who come back to the hostel in the middle of the night, be prepared for sleeplessness. The breakfast was a bit uninspired (old bread, boring musli), but tea and coffee were okay -- they charge 6 € for it. Advice, bring earplugs if you want to get some sleep and be prepared for a very basic experience.
