Sleeping Trees, Koh Rong Sanloem

Sleeping Trees is found on an extremely remote beach on the island of Koh Rong Sanloem. As such, it is not a surprise that it is quite basic -- there's no Wi-Fi, and water in the shower is often gone. However, there are some cool things here that you will find nowhere else, like the hammocks and tarpaulin climbing tower right on the beach and the bar with a beautiful view over the sea.

The Location

The hostel is located on Sunset Beach on the west side of Koh Rong Sanloem. There are two ways to get here -- either you take the slow supply boat, which is available once a day, or you walk from Saracen Bay, where most ferries will drop you. The walk is quite strenuous and is definitely not possible with suitcases, as the last bit is really steep and you have to hold onto ropes to make your way down. Many people undertake the walk as a day trip, but not many stay on the beach overnight. However, it is quite worth it for the amazing pink sunsets for which this part of the island is famous.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel provides a variety of different types of accommodation including tent and bungalow options but the dorms, which are located in a concrete building are the most popular. The building has eight beds, but each bunk is divided by a wall so it feels like you are only two people in one space. The bunks are wooden and have nice green curtains on them. Next to each of them is a small bedside table and there is a locker for each bed as well.

Common Spaces

The hostel has its own beach, which is full of comfortable seats, hammocks, and swings where you can sit. Moreover, in the main building where the reception is located, there is a bar with comfy tables and a pool table. Given that the owners are French, the hostel is quite famous for its French cuisine, so you can sit here looking at the the sea while eating a yummy crepe. However, as this part of the island is hard to supply, prices are unusually high!

Summary

Sleeping Trees is the perfect place if you want to get away from it all and see a part of the island that has not yet been destroyed by tourism. The perks of staying here are the private beach that is only a few steps away from your dorm, the huge outdoor area belonging to the hostel, and the Western-standard catering. However, do not be surprised if you encounter some unexpected animals -- you are in the jungle here, after all!
