Sturmfrei means a place unsupervised by authorities and this word defines the concept of Sturmfrei Hostel -- you can roam around, use the library, cook in the kitchen, light a campfire, or do anything that makes you feel comfortable. Therefore, you will feel totally cosy and welcome in this great hostel.
The Location
The hostel is located in a hidden area of Vagator, far away from the crowds but still in an area where small grocery shops and local-style eateries are present. The place is well signposted, so if you manage to arrive in its vicinity, the arrows will lead you all the way to its door. While it is definitely better to have your own transportation if you stay here, it is possible to walk to Vagator and Anjuna beaches on foot from the hostel. The big bonus about this place is that it is really quiet, so you will definitely not have any problem sleeping.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers two types of dorm rooms -- one inside the building and one in the outside huts. The inside ones are a lot more expensive, but offer a less authentic style. However, as only a thin sheet with which to cover yourself is offered, staying at the huts can get quite cold at night. The rooms are en suite but hot water is not always available. Also, one of the common areas is right behind the huts, which means that the talking and music outside might keep you up until people decide to go to sleep.
Common Spaces
There are a lot of common areas -- both indoors and outdoors; there are two chilling areas outside with mattresses, tables, and blankets, one of which also offers a place to light a campfire. Inside, there is a living room-like place with a mini library and a big, well-equipped kitchen with an eating area. The amazing buffet breakfast is served here between 8:30 and 10:30 in the morning. It includes unlimited amounts of toast, jam, butter, eggs, watermelon, bananas, porridge, and tea and coffee.
Summary
All in all, Sturmfrei Hostel is excellent value for the money. It is a place where you can truly feel at home, cook elaborate meals, enjoy a very filling breakfast, and soak in the real Goan vibe far away from the crowds.
