The new and shiny-looking Ibiz City Hostel is pretty much in the thick of things in Hanoi.
The Location
Just around the corner from the locally dubbed "Beer Street," this hostel is within easy staggering-home-to-bed distance of a plethora of drinking spots. But you may ask, is there a catch? Well, that depends upon which of the five floors of the hostel your dorm, or private room, is situated. There's no elevator, just stairs.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The private rooms impress. They're very spacious, with standard en suite bathrooms plus bath. Furniture is dark and chunky, almost like it belongs in another century, giving the hostel a grander feel. It's way more classy than usual in a hostel.
As for the dorms, there are modern furnishings and the bunk beds are solid with no movement, and the thin mattresses are surprisingly comfortable. Dark privacy curtains are thick, although the fitting leaves a few-centimeter gap for light to penetrate all along the top. The curtains stop forty centimeters short of the full bed length. There is a flexi-cord reading light, two electric sockets, a soft pillow, and an average duvet. All bed linen is white. There are en suite showers and separate toilet plus two sinks and bathroom mirrors. Strangely, there are numerous free toothbrushes in wrappers, small bars of soap, combs, shampoo sachets, and a little hair dryer. The double-door lockers inside the dorms are large, though the lock fitting itself seems loose and a bit weak. Bunk beds in six-, eight-, and twelve-bed dorms are available in addition to the four-bed private dorm.
Common Spaces
For guests who come here to drink, the common space is the well-stocked bar; for the lazy/weary, it's found on the ground floor next to the reception desk. Drinks are fairly priced. For other guests, there are a few sitting options near the bar and reception. During the day, music is played at a slightly-too-loud volume; voices have to be raised a bit at check-in and in general conversation. In the evening, noise from the neighbours' disco speakers starts pumping out the loud music from 8 p.m. For normal conversation or concentration, guests will have to retreat to their beds/bedrooms.
Accommodation can be booked with or without, breakfast, which is served from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Luckily, if you haven't booked it in advance, the buffet breakfast can be purchased for a reasonable price in the morning. As in most other hostels in Hanoi, the popular bus trips and tours throughout Vietnam can be booked at reception/the connecting large Sinh tour agency office right next door.
Summary
Staff working the front desk and bar speak an unexpectedly high level of English, which can be a bonus for some guests. At check-in, a deposit for a dorm room locker key and towel is payable. Cleaning is first rate, although the toilet under the stairs near the bar can get messy by early evening.
If you are wanting to party in Hanoi, this hostel could be ideal. Other guests wanting a more quiet stay might consider other options.

• Ibiz City Hostel is near Vietnam Airline bus stations or Viet jet bus station. You can go a walk about 10 minutes. Or go by taxi to the train station about 10 minutes.
• It is about 30 km from the airport to the hotel by public bus or taxi. The bus stop at Long Bien bus station is near Ibiz City Hostel. It is just 5 minutes for walking.
