Ceylon Hostel Galle is a quiet and cosy hostel with only two rooms, a nice kitchen, and a huge garden area. While it is quite far from the beach, it is only ten minutes from the train station, which makes it an ideal base for day trips in the area.
The Location
Despite what the name says, this hostel is not in Galle! Instead, Ceylon Hostel is located in a rather unusual part of Unawatuna; unlike most other accommodation providers, it is neither in the vicinity of the main beach of Unawatuna nor the Jungle Beach. It is situated in a residential neighbourhood and to get here, you will have to walk through the tiny and labyrinthine streets of the suburbs of the city -- which, however, does have a certain atmosphere. If you are staying here, you will be close to the Yatagala Temple as well as the railway station, so if your plan is to base yourself in Unawatuna but discover the surrounding areas by train, then you picked the right place for that! Another advantage of staying here is that the food prices are much lower than in the center of the town.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Ceylon Hostel is actually a family house that was converted into a hostel with the bedrooms functioning as the dorms. Needless to say, the space is rather small, and with three bunks inside, you hardly even have the space to turn around. Luckily, you can lock your bag under your bed, otherwise it would be impossible to have everybody’s stuff inside! There is only one set of toilet and shower, which is definitely not enough for this many guests. However, the bathroom is modern, nice, and more spacious than the dorms!
Common Spaces
The hostel is surrounded by a huge kitchen and right in front of the hostel, you have a patio with chairs and a table. This is the perfect place to chill in the evenings! The reception area looks more like a living room with family photos hanging here and there. When you check in, the owner screens a short movie about things to visit nearby. This is definitely a nice touch, as it gives you some good ideas of what to do. There is a small but fully equipped kitchen as well, where you can help yourself to breakfast from the fridge in the mornings. Do not expect anything fancy though -- toast with jam and banana are on the menu every day.

Ceylon Hostel is a really nice little hostel whose strength lies in the common areas and the atmosphere more than in its dormitory.
