Globetrotter Backpackers hostel originally operated under the name Globetrotter Tourist Inn, which is the name still displayed on all the signs leading here. However, it was recently transformed into a hostel, and while the target audience has changed, the original high standards of a hotel have not. A beautiful garden area, a spacious dining hall, comfortable rooms, and a delicious free breakfast make your stay unforgettable.
The Location
It is important to point out that despite what the address says, the hostel is not located in Sigiriya, but just off the Dambulla-Trincomalee road in Inamaluwa. Therefore, if you are planning a sunrise trip to Lion Rock, make sure to be aware of the eight-kilometre distance. The bus that commutes between Dambulla and Sigiriya stops right in front of the hostel though, so getting there is quite easy and cost efficient. There are a few local-style eateries and mini supermarkets on the street of the hostel, but meals can be ordered on the spot as well.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel offers several dorm rooms with four beds inside each. This arrangement guarantees that there is enough space inside and the extra furniture of tables and towel hangers further add to your comfort. While the air is really hot inside, the rooms are equipped with fans, which help cool down the rooms. In front of the rooms, there is a terrace area with chairs, which is a really nice place to relax. The rooms are en suite and the bathroom is clean and spacious, but there is no hot water.
Common Spaces
The territory of Globetrotters Backpackers is huge and the most attractive part is the huge, lush garden full of flowers. You can relax here in a hammock or borrow a book from the mini library found in the eating area. This part of the hostel is housed by a separate, semi-open-air building and is a nice place for bigger groups to hang out in. This is where the delicious breakfast is served in the morning which includes cut fruit, eggs, toast, jam, butter, and milk tea. The only downside of the hostel is that the owner keeps turning the Wi-Fi off when he thinks it is not in use and there is no Wi-Fi during the night either.
Summary
Globetrotter Backpackers is totally worth the money you are paying for it. As soon as you enter its huge double gates, you will find yourself in a haven of peace. It is an ideal place to relax after a busy day exploring all that Sigiriya has to offer even if the location does not facilitate easy sightseeing.
