Despite the dorm style accommodation, Mount Blue Tourist Hostel has less of a hostel and more of a homestay feel -- located in a residential area, it is housed by a typical Nepalese-style family home. Here, the emphasis is on keeping things low cost; for a relatively cheap price you get a simple bed and shower without many frills.
The Location
The hostel can be reached either from the busy Baidam Road or through the labyrinthian streets of the residential area in which it is located. The neighbourhood itself is not too attractive but it is only in fifteen minutes' walking distance from Pewa Lake and the central touristy area. A huge advantage of the location is that you have a variety of reasonably priced eateries right on your doorstep. Also, some smaller supermarkets are only five minutes away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Most of the dorm rooms offer four beds and lockers with each of them. However, at the time of the review, most of them do not lock properly. The rooms are quite small and feel a bit crammed; the furniture is old and the bunks shake with every move and the ladder feels quite dangerous as well. The rooms are en suite but the bathroom is simple and small with nowhere to put your toiletries or your clothes without getting them wet.
Common Spaces
There are a few options for common areas -- there are balconies on each floor, but these are mostly used as smoking areas. There is also a sitting area near the reception but it does not feel really inviting and there is a separate room where people can chill and watch TV. However, it feels like these are not really popular with the guests and it is mostly used by the receptionist who is sitting there watching TV programmes in Nepalese. These is also a kitchen but it is not sufficiently equipped and no matches or lighters are provided to light the gas.
Summary
All in all, at Mount Blue Hostel, you get what you pay for. While the place does offer some of the most competitive prices in the city, the hostel only provides the bare minimum -- an ok place to sleep and have a shower, but not much else.
