Offering probably the best views in M’Pay Bay on Koh Rong Samloem, The Cliff Hostel is the perfect hideaway in this quiet location far away from the hustle and bustle of the world.
The Location
M’Pay Bay is tiny and you can walk from one end to the other in half an hour, so most backpackers’ accommodations are less than a few minutes away from each other. However, it does make a difference that The Cliff is the last hostel on the far side of the village, which makes it feel quite secluded and private. You do have to walk up a pretty steep dirt road to get here though, which often involves jumping from one stone to the other, so try not to carry a suitcase. The hostel is on the side of the island that faces the ocean and some excellent sunsets are guaranteed from its terrace.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel applies a really interesting design when it comes to the dorms -- they are in fact semi-open air. There is a roof above them and a wall behind, but from two sides it is open. The wind that blows through is welcome on hot days, but it also gives access to all the jungle animals around, of which there are many. You are protected from mosquitos through a net though. Interestingly though, it is constructed in a way that rain never enters the rooms. The beds are individual and quite huge, but there are many of them lined up next to each other, so it might feel a bit crowded. The bathrooms are in a separate building behind the dorms and this is actually the most upbeat part of the hostel, with its colourful paintings. The facilities are clean and plentiful.
Common Spaces
The hostel boasts with a bar that has the best view over the sea. This is on a wooden platform with many beanbags, pillows, and low tables, and you can just sit here even if you are not consuming anything. The sunset from here is just spectacular! There is also a little stone staircase leading down to the sea and you can rent snorkeling equipment for a cheap price at the reception. However, be careful when the sea is choppy and look out for sea urchins!

If you are longing for some quiet time away from the world and being in the tiny and isolated bay of M’Pay is not enough, come to The Cliff and you will be able to soak in nothing else but the fresh air, the sounds of the sea, and unspoilt natural panorama.
