It should be noted that a cat -- who is handsome and possesses an even temperament -- lives in Buathai Hostel Hua Hin, and that fact should be taken into consideration when deciding whether to stay here.
The Location
Location-wise, Buathai Hostel is a little away from the centre. Turn immediately right, leaving the train station and follow the constant stream of traffic southward. Cross the train tracks where the traffic does, before bearing right and continuing as the road turns in an anti-clockwise sweep. It's a further two hundred metres to the hostel, on the right side of the road.
Ample bars, eateries, shops, massage parlours, and a lively food market are at your fingertips. The neighbourhood is something of a village drawn out along a couple of roads heading out of town. The beach is a twenty-minute walk east from here.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are of a reasonable size and are impressive; they're fresh, new, clean, and stylish. Each pod-style bed has privacy boarding and curtains. The bed frames are firm, with a wide, comfortable mattress; they neither move nor squeak. A convenient bedside light and one electric wall socket are allocated per bed. You get a complimentary large towel; there's a good-sized, private locker with key and fitment for your own padlock, which gives reassurance. It's got everything a backpacker could wish for. The upstairs six-bed dorm has its own big, private balcony.
Next door to the upstairs dorm is a combined shower and toilet; this is a fair-sized bathroom and is lacking for nothing, but ideally there would be another separate toilet on this level.
Down on the ground floor is a second dorm of ten beds. Sadly, again, there's just one shower and toilet together in a room under the stairs without a window.
Common Spaces
On the ground floor, there is a nice selection of small coffee and dining tables and chairs, as well as four little funky sofas. High stools are positioned to sit at bar height next to counters. Lots of reading materials, some games and travel information for the guests to enjoy. Ample spots to eat, drink, read, plan the day ahead, chat, or just lounge.
The hostel interior is very attractive and well thought out. Outside, the front of the hostel can boast a very well-proportioned seating area to enjoy a drink, or a meal. There is also a designated smoking area. Everywhere is maintained to a high standard and kept very clean -- not one cat hair in sight.
Summary
Quiet, helpful staff offer local knowledge on the town and surrounding attractions. Taxis, bicycles, and motor scooters can be booked. Tickets for onward transport to the islands including Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, and Koh Samui can be purchased at the front desk.
Backpackers choosing this hostel tend to find their own space and remain focused on their travel plans. So, don't expect to meet many travelers open to conversation here, which is rather a pity when the hostel is so smart and comfortable. There's definitely not a party hostel vibe, and yet if a number of guests wishing to enjoy meeting new people were to check in, there is a good possibility to enjoy the options the hostel offers. Alongside the small kitchenette are the bonuses of a microwave, big fridge/freezer, and a coin-operated washing machine. No breakfast option exists, however, free tea, coffee, fruit, and sweet snacks are on offer throughout the day. This hostel comes recommended, but not for those who come to Hua Hin specifically for the beach.
