Royal Hostel is housed in a haveli-style, typical desert villa -- the amazing architecture of which will make you feel like you are staying at a very exquisite place. Moreover, the treatment you will receive here is for royalty. However, the dorm itself is simple and uninspiring and certain basic things are definitely missing.

The Location

Royal Hostel is located in the southern part of the small town of Jaisalmer, but it does not really matter as everything is in walking distance. The railway station is about twenty minutes from here on foot, but the hostel is happy to arrange free pick-up for you. The fort can be reached in about fifteen minutes and the central bazaar area is just on your doorstep. Moreover, buses to most major cities of Rajasthan depart from just across the street.

Rooms and Bathrooms

While the whole building is absolutely impressive, the dorm looks a bit makeshift. It is situated in the basement under the reception area, which means that it has no windows. It is furnished with nothing else but nine beds, out of which only two come with plugs. However, upon request, you will get a kettle and cups in the room as well. The bedsheets look quite dirty, making you wonder if they are changed in between guests. Moreover, you receive a bit too much attention from the staff, who keep randomly walking into the room to adjust the blankets on the bed or ask you if everything is ok. A huge shortcoming of the place is that for the nine guests, there is only one toilet and shower and these are quite far from the room on the ground floor. It is clean though, with plenty of hot water.

Common Spaces

There are two common areas. One is in front of the reception, which is pretty much the only place where you will be able to access the Wi-Fi properly (it does not work in the dorm room at all); however, this space is only big enough for about four people. The other option is the rooftop terrace; since it also operates as a restaurant, you might feel a bit awkward sitting here without ordering anything. It is a shame though because the views are quite nice from here.

Summary

All in all, Royal Hostel would be a really nice hostel, but certain basic arrangements are not properly thought through. You should definitely come here if you want to take a picture of the facade and make all of your friends jealous, but don't come here if you will need to rely on the Wi-Fi or if you will be annoyed if you have to queue for the bathroom in the morning.
