Selina San José is a modern and hip-feeling hostel centred around a bar.
The Location
The hostel is located up on Avenida Nine and isn't too far a walk to the bus stations that give access to Tamarindo, Liberia, Tortuguero, and Puerto Viejo. The neighbourhood is fairly relaxed, yet still close to the museum and a few other of the main sights in downtown San José. If you arrive after dark, take a taxi. Never walk the streets here at night, especially alone -- that goes for anywhere in San José.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms here are large and spacious and have really great-quality mattresses. It is like sleeping on a firm and puffy cloud. The linen is also clean and new. There are lockers that you can use to store valuables if you have your own lock as well.
The bathrooms are en suite off the dorm room -- it's one of the largest bathrooms ever seen. It is moderately clean with some mold and clogged drains, but the shower is the most unfortunate part. After fidgeting for ages with the knobs, you might get lucky to obtain a dribble of lukewarm water that will then shock you with intermittent and rapid bursts of freezing cold water.
Common Spaces
There is a huge area of common space here that is centred around the bar, where they serve drinks and food as well. It is a really great place to hang out and meet people, and there are an assortment of tables and chairs, couches and hammocks. If you're unlucky enough to have a hangover from the night before and want to get a decent sleep, you may struggle if they have allocated you a room that is right off of this main area. It's noisy with music from the bar, even at 8 a.m.
There is a large area with a kitchen in the upstairs part of the hostel as well, and this is fairly well equipped for cooking meals. The fridges aren't very cold, however, and they smell really bad, so maybe avoid foods that need to be put in a fridge. The space is nice, though, and comfortable and has a piano off to the side.
Summary
This is a really nice hostel, with a great vibe. The decorations are really cool and the place has been well thought-out in many ways. They offer airport transfers, breakfast, daily yoga, and other tours for a cost also. Depending on what you are in San Jose for may determine if this place is for you -- if it's sleep you're after, maybe not, but if you are after a fun and social time, this is definitely a place for you!

• Take a bus to San Jose. When you arrive, walk to the end of the Central Avenue where you will find the Yellow House. Take the first left entrance and you will see our destination.
• From the airport
• Book with us an airport shuttle for $17 per person. Between 11:00 pm and 3:00 am the early shuttle cost is $25 per person or you can get the private one for $45, maximum 4 people.
