Papaya Lodge is a small surf hostel in the heart of El Tunco. The hostel offers air conditioning, a small pool, and surfboard rental.
The Location
Papaya Lodge is located in the middle of El Tunco about five minutes' walk away from the beach. There are multiple restaurants and small shops around as well as a ATM on the other side of the street from the hostel. Both the hostel and the neighbourhood are quiet and feel very safe.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are both private and dorm rooms available on the property. The dorms have sturdy wooden bunk beds with enough space in the lower bunks to sit up. The sheets are clean and the mattresses comfortable. There are some electrical sockets in the dorm, but not near every bunk and there are no lights in the bunks. Dorms are air conditioned twenty-four/seven, despite a sign saying that the air conditioning will only be on if there are more than four occupants in the dorm. There are medium lockers in the rooms (bring a padlock). Dorms are not locked and there is not control over who enters the property. The hostel is fairly quiet and relaxed. There are two shared bathrooms available for people staying in the dorms. The water is cold only (which is refreshing considering El Tunco's hot climate) and there is a rain shower head. The bathrooms could be cleaner though. Apart from the floor or the toilet, there is no space to put clothes while showering.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a small but clean pool available for use and loungers both around the pool as well as on a first-floor terrace. Furthermore there is another covered terrace on the first floor as well as tables near the pool in front of the “restaurant,” which serves basic cheap food. Furthermore there is a kitchen equipped with the basics available for guest use. Apart from a couple of books lying around here and there, there is no book exchange, but you can borrow surfboards. The hostel has a social but quiet atmosphere and a very relaxed vibe.
