Kamala Surf & Backpacker Hostel is a lively hostel with a family feel situated right next to Montañita's main beach. Its chill daytime atmosphere transforms into a fun party vibe at night, as guests gather around the bar. With great facilities, it's a fantastic base from which to explore Montañita.
The Location
This hostel is situated a twenty-five-minute walk on the beach away from Montañita's main town, which means that anyone arriving by bus into town is best off getting a taxi if they have heavy bags. The cost of a taxi between the town and the hostel is reasonable, especially when split by a group. The taxi drivers will know where it is and the hostel is just off the beach if you want to walk around thirty minutes from the terminal. It's not advisable to walk into town at night, as there is no guarantee the beach is safe. One benefit of this location is that the beach that connects onto the back of the hostel is a lot quieter than the stretch by the main town. The location adds to an intimate atmosphere as many people will eat and drink in the hostel before heading out. There are not any corner shops nearby, so if you do not want to eat from the hostel's extensive menu, it's advisable to bring snacks with you.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms are located in wooden huts and the multi-bed dorms have bunk beds with a mosquito net included for all beds. The rooms have slightly worn lockers underneath the beds to use and the rooms themselves are spacious. Plug sockets are found away from the beds with tables supplied on which you can put your devices. The room are located in well-maintained and large wooden huts with high ceilings.
The bathrooms are communal for the larger rooms and are relatively clean, apart from some sand. Some of the showers don't have warm water and the pressure is not that strong. The bathrooms have soap and a mirror at head height to use. There are additional bathrooms by the main bar so guests don't have to return to their room.
Common Spaces
The hostel has an abundance of common spaces, including hammocks, sofas, and loungers spread across the property. Some of these are covered, while others are perfect for soaking in the sun. Other highlights include a pool and a volleyball court for use. A surf school is located on the hostel grounds for people to rent boards and organise lessons.
The bar is the main hub of the hostel and is very lively at most times of day. With its location away from town, a lot of guests eat and drink in the hostel before heading out, which creates a buzzing social atmosphere. There are also daily "family meals," which are a great way to meet other guests. The bar also has a large Jenga set, table-tennis table, and pool table. The evening atmosphere is very social with it easy to meet new people.
Summary
Kamala Surf and Backpacker Hostel is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Montañita and still have a party atmosphere.
