Kings Beach Backpackers is one of a number of backpacker hostels in Port Elizabeth, a major transport hub on the south coast; virtually every traveler along it will stop here for a night or two. There's plenty of choice both in the city center and in the suburbs.
The Location
Kings Beach Backpackers is on Windermere Street, just three streets from Kings Beach itself and a five-minute walk through Kings Beach Park to the sand. Minibus taxis pass along Humewood Road into the city center and the bus and train stations and there's a supermarket fifteen minutes' walk away. Along Kings Beach Promenade, there are also a number of bars and restaurants convenient for guests.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This neat little place has three six-bed dorms -- one mixed, one female, and one male. All three are clean and very well kept with rather thin mattresses, but the bunks are solidly built, the top bunk well above the bottom for plenty of headroom and with ladders for access. There are a couple of power points in each room and the free Wi-Fi extends to all rooms in the main house. In the backyard, there are two chalets -- one a double room and one a family room. Both these share three bathrooms outside, whilst the rooms inside the house share two bathrooms. Everything is very neat, clean, and colorful. The inside rooms are also all carpeted.
Common Spaces
The house has a veranda wrapped around it, and there are chairs to sit out in the sun; inside by the reception desk, you'll find a very comfortable sitting room festooned with sofas and chairs stacked with cushions, and a TV. The polished wood floor shared kitchen, is big with kettle, toaster, microwave, four-hob electric cooker, and a fridge for guests use and tons of cupboard space. The kitchen is kept immaculate and has a "free tea and coffee all day" station. Bread and jam is left out for free breakfast in the mornings. A small dining table sits in the middle. There's plenty of cutlery, crockery, pots, and pans for guests' use. The back garden also has plenty of space, if you fancy a sunbathe, but are too lazy to walk to the beach!
Summary
This is a lovely little place with bags of charm. If you are traveling by Baz Bus, it drops you at the door; you may wonder why people would ever choose to stay in the center when you can stay at a place like this. Wi-Fi is free and the signal is ok and available throughout the house. The walls of the house are decorated with posters and flyers from backpackers from every other corner of South Africa, so there's plenty of ideas for your onward trip. A lot of loving care has been invested in this place and it shows; it's a terrific place to stay and oozes warmth.
