5 days stay in July 2013
I had very pleasant time in Somnio, the hostel is in proximity of major attractions. The best asset is the hostel's staff. They're friendly, knowledgeable and caring young people, who went out of their way to help solve any problem, never tired to give guests tips for sight seeings, restaurants, directions. They also kept everything clean and tidy. I had a bad experience when ATM at a nearby bank didn't return my debit card, it was Saturday morning the bank closed, quite a desperate situation. Jose made several emergency calls to help me out, also Ariadna, Miguel and others you ALL are wonderful. I hope I'll be back, and definitely stay in Somnio again.

Somnio Barcelona is overall a great accommodation choice while visiting Barcelona. It is a small, newly renovated hostel that is advertised as an upscale hostel and lives up to the promise. The Location You couldn't ask for a better location from something so moderately priced. The hostel is located less than five minutes on foot from the main artery Passeig de Gracia, and less than ten minutes from the central Plaza de Catalunya. You could spend weeks in Barcelona without knowing what the metro looks like. Every major tourist attraction is accessible on foot, not to mention metro and train stations, as well as the airport shuttle which stops in Plaza de Catalunya (this is reasonably priced). From there, it is very straightforward to walk to the hostel, following Passeig de Gracia and then Diputacio. Parking is also available on the street for a daily fee. The hostel is located in a safe and well-lit neighbourhood, making it suitable for women traveling alone. The reception is twenty-four hours, meaning that you have to buzz downstairs and have the receptionist let you in (he or she has access to the video camera at the entrance). This plus the very small size of the hostel makes it feel very safe and homey. Rooms and Bathrooms The entire hostel is newly renovated, and is probably one of the cleanest hostels you will visit. The doors open with magnetic cards, and the in-room lockers have their own key, so you will not have to bring your own lock. There are only ten rooms, including two six-bed dorms, male and female, respectively. There are private rooms available, with both double and twin beds. The rooms and bedding are very clean, and so are the bathrooms. The hostel is cleaned daily, and they work around the room availability, so as to not kick you out of the room while they are cleaning. There are three bathrooms, each including a shower, toilet, and sink. They are clean, however, the hot water can take more than five minutes to reach the shower, which can be confusing for the newer guests. Once you get used to it, it's not a major inconvenience, but at first you might get frustrated and be tempted to take a cold shower instead of fiddling with the shower knobs for ten minutes. The shower area is practical, and it includes both soap dishes and towel racks and hooks. The towels are provided by the hostel, which is a nice bonus. Common Spaces There is only one common space, located in the reception area, which includes the computer with free internet access, the TV, and a few armchairs and a coffee table. This is enough, though, given the number of rooms. The one drawback is that there is no kitchen, so you cannot cook there. They do have a fridge and plates/utensils and you are allowed to use them if you just ask. Since they are located behind the reception desk, it is not very convenient, because you have to ask the receptionist to use them -- however, the staff (including the two owners) are very friendly and always willing to accommodate. You can purchase breakfast or drinks at the hostel, but they are not cheap, so if you are on a budget it would be wiser to either have breakfast outside, or buy grocery store food and store it in the fridge to use it in the mornings. The two owners are young and very friendly. They have frequent shifts, so you will most likely meet them if you stay for a few days. They are both very helpful with any question you might have, calling for restaurant reservations, finding information on the internet, or anything else you might need (such as bottle openers; storing your luggage after you check out; calling other hostels, restaurants, taxicabs). Since it's a small hostel, the staff will always have enough time for you and this fact only would make it worthwhile to stay there. The hostel is more subdued than others, and both visitors and staff alike seem to be more mature. This means that you will be likely to meet many very interesting people there, with whom you will be able to carry on a conversation beyond the the usual "let's get drunk until we throw up on our shoes!" hostel talk. Summary Overall, this is one of the best hostels we have visited. We could not have asked for a better location, and if you decide to stay for more than a couple of days it will feel like home. You can be as social or anti-social as you like and you will most likely have a great experience. The owners and the hand-picked staff will go above and beyond what's expected in order to make your stay pleasant.
I really enjoyed my stay here! It was fantastic for solo women travelers. Perfect location, quiet area but close to the main square (Within walking distance). Rooms are small but very comfortable with air conditioning that can be easily adjusted. Shower rooms are a reasonable size, regularly checked, and kept clean. A good selection of travel guides are available to look at in reception. Nice modern sitting area by reception with TV and free internet. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful, reception was manned twenty-four/seven. Would defiantly say with Somino Hostels again!
