Located just a 15 minute drive away from the Sekenani gate of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, our fully solar powered one bedroom container cottage is set in its own small private garden within our farm (Kobi Farm) near Nkoilale. It comprises of an open plan lounge and self catering kitchen, double bedroom, bathroom and outside seating areas.
The cozy bedroom contains a queen size (5x6') double bed, wardrobe and mosquito net while the kitchen has a full gas oven, fridge freezer, toaster and all the other utensils and cutlery you should need during your stay. The bathroom provides a solar heated hot water shower, flush toilet and sink with hand soap and body wash provided. Outside there is a small BBQ grill, you just need to come with your own briquettes/charcoal, as well as a fireplace area where we will light you a bonfire in the evenings when it is dry if you would like.
The cottage comfortably sleeps 1-2 guests in a double bed, for groups or families of up to 4 guests we can provide a large dome tent with twin camp beds and beddings in the garden for an additional $40 per night.
We do get mosquitoes in this area as we are close to a river and water reservoirs so make sure to wear insect repellent, especially in the evenings. There is also bug spray provided in the cottage and plug in mosquito repellants which you can turn on at night.
We also run our safari company Mara Explorers from here so we can arrange you taxi transfers to the Maasai Mara and game drives with our experienced Maasai guides during your stay, as well as various other activities and full board meals at the container cottage if you don't feel like cooking.
Kobi Farm is home to our dogs, cats, chickens, turkeys, geese, sheep and cows and they will sometimes come up to the cottage garden so you must be an animal lover if youd like to stay here! One of our cats especially likes to come and hang out at the cottage with guests.
The whole 5 acre farm is securely fenced with a solar powered electric fence, beyond the fence we have 6 acres of Acacia woodland leading to the Talek River which we have left untouched for the wildlife. Jackals, Warthogs, Impala, Elephants and Giraffe are regularly spotted passing through, especially in the early morning and evenings, since on the other side of the river is the Olkinyei Conservancy. This side of the property is not safe to walk in unless we have sent out a guide or spotter first to make sure there are no Elephants, Lions, Buffalo or Hippo in the vicinity.
There are lots of other activities available in the Maasai Mara including game drives, traditional BBQ, hot air ballooning, horse riding, Maasai village visits, local homestay, sundowners, nature walks and bush camping inside the Maasai Mara. More information can be found in the photos. Just let us know if there is anything you would like any additional information about.
You are also welcome to take part in these complementary activities with our guide as part of your stay with us:
Herding. Join us daily at 8.30-10.30am as we take our animals out for grazing. Meet our cows and sheep as you learn about the Maasai way of life and the challenges of keeping livestock in this rural wildlife area.
Nkoilale village walk. Take a walk with our guide on the quiet roads to our nearest town of Nkoilale. It's approximately a 7 km (4 mile) round trip and will take 2-3 hours depending on how fast you walk and how much you explore. You will pass by homesteads and see how day to day life goes on here. In Nkoilale you will find small shops, bars and local restaurants and every Monday is the weekly market.
Sunset viewing. Head down to the riverside with our guide in the evening for approximately 1 hour and spend some time on our lookout. Check out sunset and see if any wildlife is about. If you have your own drinks and snacks you are welcome to take them with you.
Farm Walk. We can take you for a short walk around the farm where you can meet our geese, turkeys, chickens and dogs. We'll pass by our beehives and you can see where our honey comes from but don't wear any strong perfumes!
Before booking please make sure you are happy with our house rules and are willing to look after our eco cottage:
~We are off grid and run entirely on solar power which means we avoid national grid power cuts and the noise and pollution from a generator :) It does mean however that we cannot run very high power items such as electric kettles/hair dryers/straighteners, etc., as they can overload and damage our solar system causing a black out and expensive repairs. If you have an item you would like to use but you are not sure of the power consumption please consult with us first to avoid causing any damage to our system.
~We rely solely on rainwater harvesting for our clean water supply and as this is an arid area with regular periods of drought we ask you to be considerate when using the water. Please try to maximise your time in the shower to 10 minutes, do not leave taps running unnecessarily. While waiting for shower water to become hot you can collect the water in the bucket provided to water the flowers rather than waste it. Also if you notice any water/pipe leaks please let us know!
~The septic waste uses a biodigester system. To avoid blocking it please only flush normal toilet paper down the toilet! Please use the bins provided for any other items.
~This is generally a peaceful area with nature and wildlife around so we ask if you want to play music to not have it too loud and to keep noise levels as low as possible after 10pm.
How to reach us:
We are located in the bush on the border of the Olkinyei Conservancy, 3km from Nkoilale town and 2km from the main tarmac road, on the edge of the Maasai Mara. It is approximately 240km and a 4-5 hour drive from Nairobi via the town of Narok. The Sekenani gate to the Maasai Mara National Reserve is a 15 minute (11km) drive away. If you don't have your own transport during your stay and you would like to visit the town, it is around a 30 minute walk to Nkoilale or it's also possible to get a motorbike taxi for a few $.
~We can arrange you a private door to door taxi transfer from Nairobi to The Pink Container for US$ 150 each way for up to 2 passengers or US$ 180 each way for up to 4 passengers. Taxi transfers to/from other locations can also be arranged.
~For independent travellers Nkoilale is accessible via public transport from Nairobi and we can arrange to pick you up in Nkoilale and bring you to our farm. In Nairobi you would first need to get a Narokline 14 seater matatu from the Nyamakima area of the CBD which will depart once it's full, it is around a 3 hour journey and costs the local currency equivalent of approx. $5 per person. In Narok we can connect you with a driver who will bring you to The Pink Container for $40, alternatively you can go to the matatu stage next to Naivas supermarket and get a 'probox' matatu going to Nkoilale or Sekenani, they cost approx. $5 per person and once they depart it takes around 1.5 hours to arrive. Ask to be dropped at 'Kings' in Nkoilale and let us know once you depart Narok so we can meet you there. If you are travelling to us via public transport we will provide you with a complementary pick up and drop off in Nkoilale.
~If you are self driving with your own vehicle you will need to leave Nairobi and head to Mai Mahiu or Suswa before branching left to Narok. After Narok you need to take a left again onto the C12 and follow the tarmac all the way to just before Nkoilale. From the main road Google Maps will not show you the correct route to arrive at Kobi Farm as it does not recognise our road so if you plan to self drive please drop us a message in advance of your arrival so we can send you the GPS points showing you the last 3 km to our gate. The last 3km is a rough road so having a vehicle with high ground clearance is recommended, a 4WD is not normally required unless it is very wet.
*Please note if you are coming with your own driver we have nowhere for them to stay at the farm so they will need to drop you off and pick you up as required. Our closest township with lodging available is Nkoilale.
