The Hostelz.com Review - Genuine, independent review you can trust.
On the island of Koh Rong, which is well known for being invaded by expat ventures, it is a breeze of fresh air to see some local young people open a hostel like Bunna's Jungle. It is far from perfect, but if you decide to stay here, you are guaranteed to get a genuine insight into the local island culture.
The Location
Bunna’s Jungle is on Koh Rong island, which is accessible only by boat. You have two options -- the speed ferry, which is fast but really expensive, or the supply boat, which is cheap but only goes once a day. The hostel is closest to Four Kilometer Beach, so make sure to buy your ticket here, otherwise you will have to walk around forty minutes from the main harbour. Unlike most other hostels, Bunna’s Jungle is not on the beach. It is in the forest in an extremely quiet and isolated location, but still, it will only take you ten minutes to walk out to the beach. It is ideal for those who are not so keen on the party vibe and prefer a more tranquil location.
Rooms and Bathrooms
At Bunna’s Jungle, you can find dorm and private rooms alike and you have two types of buildings to choose from -- the bungalows and the concrete buildings. The dorms have three bunks with six beds inside. All the lower beds have thick, dark curtains around them, but unfortunately not the upper ones. You have lockers inside the room as well and the beds come with individual power plugs. The bathrooms are quite basic but are clean and ok.
Common Spaces
The territory of the hostel is massive and you will be surrounded by a huge forest, so you can just wander off in any direction. However, there is also an enormous, semi-open bar and socialisation area, even if at the time of the review this is still very basic. There is a space designated for bonfires at night and some hammocks and chairs here and there where you can chill.
Summary
Bunna’s Jungle still has to come a long way if it wants to compete with the trendy hostels run by Westerners all over the island. However, the concept is not bad -- finally there's a place that caters to those who are not fans of parties and just come to the island to enjoy the peace and beautiful natural environment.
