Rams Gratitude Inn, Varkala

Rams Gratitude Inn is a hostel with a mission -- every day, a portion of the proceeds go toward providing meals for the poor and less fortunate of Varkala. Not surprisingly, the place has a really nice, welcoming, and relaxing vibe and is full of positive energy; while the rooms are not amazing, the atmosphere keeps people coming back.

The Location

Rams Gratitude Inn is located on the main road that leads from Varkala city centre to the beach. While the city centre is rather far to walk, the beach can be reached after a ten-minute stroll from here. However, according to locals, this side of the beach is more for Indians and they recommend the northern end for foreigners. Just behind the hostel is a sacred lake, and opposite that is the most important temple of the city, so if you aim to do some sightseeing, it is a good location for that too. On the street of the hostel, there are many souvenir shops, massage parlours, restaurants, and local-style eateries.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The place offers both dorm and private accommodation. The dorms are small and cosy, with only three beds inside, which gives the place a very relaxing feel. However, the style is quite old-fashioned and reminds you more of a monastery than a hostel for young people. The rooms are en suite even if the bathroom is small and only has cold water. The dorms are equipped with lockers, for which keys are also provided.

Common Spaces

The hostel has a tiny green area around it, but only a few chairs are provided to help you enjoy this space. On the first floor, these are some hammocks, mattresses, and pillows. There is also a mini-kitchen here with a kettle as well as free tea, coffee, and sugar. However, an area where more people could sit down together is missing. Moreover, Wi-Fi is only available in a small area outside the rooms, so many people just sit on the stairs in order to use it.

Summary

While the location of Ram Gratitude Inn is perfect, the comfort level of the place is not as high as it could be. However, if you don't mind a simple place, by staying here you can also contribute to the great cause that the hostel supports.
