HI - YHA London - Oxford Street Hostel Reviews

Central and clean, room rather cold

Central location. Friendly staff. Good and clean showers and toilets. Room rather chilly (january), not really cosy during the day, but warm enough for sleeping (then again, hostel guests usually don't spend much time in their room anyway). Poor sound insulation of window. always felt as if it was tilted (which it wasn't). Personal bad experience -- Had booked room with double bed. Got room with bunk bed instead. Not so great when with girlfriend. Booking was unmistakable (confirmed at desk), but we were given the bunk bed room anyway. As if we wouldn't notice. Complaint was answered with apologising shrug and offer to move to a different YHA Hostel in London. Quite a disappointment right at the beginning of our holidays.

Clean, relaxed atmosphere

This was the first hostel I've ever been to and it was a really good experience. It was very easy to find and ideally located, pretty close to a lot of major sites and a five minute walk from the tube. The YHA is very clean and the environment is very friendly and relaxed. The staff are all helpful and the other guests are friendly. I don't have anything negative to say, definitely worth staying here if you're in London.

The overall impression generated by the HI - YHA London - Oxford Street Hostel is a bland one -- the rooms are nothing special. The hostel's location is without a doubt its main selling point.

The Location

Superbly placed in Soho and just a few minutes from Oxford Street and the underground, the hostel is in the middle of the action.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorms are basic but good, being perfectly comfortable and clean. They make the hostel a serviceable base but are no better than those at much cheaper hostels in London. Beds are a mixture of bunk and non-bunk and dorm rooms contain a useful sink and mirror.

For the high price tag, it would also not be unreasonable to expect better bathrooms. The toilets, although plentiful, were often dirty. The showers were also in need of repair and renovation. During our stay one of the showers could not be turned fully off and trickled all night, which must have proved annoying to those in the room next to it. Shower cubicles are also very small, with barely enough room to turn. There is a soap dish and small stool in the corner on which to leave your clothes. Wooden security lockers are provided in the dorms. These are spacious enough for a medium-sized suitcase and are free to use, although if you don't have your own padlock you will have to buy one from reception.

Common Spaces

The hostel has a good kitchen for guest use. There is also a TV room located on the reception floor. The hostel takes up two floors of a building, with the dorms upstairs and the reception and common areas downstairs. The first floor of the hostel, confusingly enough, is the third floor of the building. There is a lift from street level to reception but thereafter you will be directed up the steep narrow staircase to the dorms. It is only a short distance but worth noting for those intending to travel with very heavy luggage.

The atmosphere in the hostel is fairly quiet and subdued, and certainly does not come across as anything near a party hostel. Fellow guests create a friendly but quiet atmosphere, and the hostel appears safe and secure.

Summary

It is certainly a comfortable enough hostel and the location is superb for Soho, but beds are expensive and the decor drab, bathroom and shower facilities poor, and atmosphere uninspiring. Also, unlike many YHA hostels, breakfast isn't included in the price. The free tours offered may go some way to make up for these things but probably not enough.

This hostel was not great. I think the heat added to our unpleasant stay, but first of all we had to climb seven flights of stairs just to get there. Then because the location is so central, there was noise from the streets all night long. Also, they do not include breakfast. The location is great though, especially if you want to party in Soho. And you can easily walk to Picadilly Circus. Overall, this hostel wasn't the greatest, but if you can't find anywhere else, go here.

Overall, it wasn't that bad, the best part about it was the location, as it was in a spot where everything was easily reached. I only had a problem one night where a homeless woman was staying with us, and it made the night and following morning rather unpleasant. Other than that reception was good -- it was a quiet time.

I stayed here in March 2004 for about one week. While the prices may seem high compared to YHAs in other countries; it is in fact a very good deal given that it's in smack in the middle of Central London. The dorm room and bathrooms were fine. I even found free wireless from a place next door to surf with my laptop. Highly recommended for its location.

Shame on the YHA, who have impressed me a lot all over the world, on opening a overpriced craphole like this. It actually isn't a craphole--it's okay--but the price is just jaw-dropping. Basically I've just spent four nights at the Sydney Central Hostel for the price of one night here. I hope the YHA doesn't start to exploit people in all their hostels as they have in this one. It's very clean and friendly, though!!!

I've been there once for 3 nights, coming from Paris where I live... It's a nice, clean place and very central to Soho, the gay scene and theatreland--perfect to hang around London night life without spending lots and lots of pounds with cabs. There's no curfew, and at night just ask at the doorphone to open the door. 2 minutes walking to the Oxford Street tube station and the Hare Krishna temple and an excellent vegetarian restaurant. You can cook in the big kitchen and keep your food in the refrigerators without hassle. It's a good hostel.

Really great location in Soho. Only downside was the very early construction workers starting work at 7am which disturbed me and a few car or shop alarms going off through the night. It is not the hostels fault just unexpected. Overall our stay was great. Enjoyed our breakfast and the room was secure. Shower and toilet facilities very clean. And friendly staff.

Great location. Super clean. Felt safe. Staff and guests were friendly. We liked the lounge and kitchen. In the room, WiFi spotty, but worked fine in the lounge. Would stay again.

This hostel is in a great area, great pub around the corner for good cheap pub food (suggested at reception). Rooms were very clean/like new, liked that there were private showers right down the hall. Lockers in room under bed and each bed has a light as well as wall outlet to charge phone. Staff weren't frendliest but it was still fine. I would stay here again :)
