Relax a Lodge Reviews

Kerikeri Farm Hostel sits out of town in the middle of an organic orange orchard. There are also some animals, a sheep, two Kunekune pigs, chickens, and two dogs. The hostel is quiet and has a very homey feeling. Free pickups and dropoffs for the buses in town are available.

The Location

The hostel is located near Kerikeri, about five kilometers from the town center. It will take you about one hour to walk or you can rent a free bicycle along with a helmet from the hostel. Kerikeri is a town with two big supermarkets (Countdown and New World), some food shops, coffee places, and stores. It is also home to the oldest stone building in New Zealand.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There is one dorm room that sleeps four people and is adjacent to the living room. All beds are fully made up. Besides the dorm there are twin and double rooms and some cottages in the orchard. The bathrooms are shared; there is one bathroom with a shower and a toilet and a second bathroom with a toilet -- all are cleaned daily.

Common Spaces

The common living room features a fireplace, comfy couches, and a couple tables for having your meals. There is an open kitchen that even has a dishwasher and free spices. There are plenty of fridges to store your food. Also plenty of free oranges and mandarins are available while in season, along with free tea and coffee. There is no TV in the hostel. You get free Wi-Fi or you can also use the computer there for free. On the outside terrace are plenty of chairs and a hammock and a BBQ grill. There is also a pool available for free.

Summary

If you are a light sleeper you might want to bring some earplugs, as the common room is right next to the dorm room and you will hear some voices carrying through. The hostel is run by a German/Japanese couple, so there are many guests from Germany and Japan. If you have a car, there are many nice excursions to take -- an information booklet is available at the hostel.

Just outside of Kerikeri is the Kerikeri Farm Hostel. This luscious part of the North Island is where the first Europeans settled and conflicts with the Maori led to the Treaty of Waitangi. Kerikeri boasts the first stone building in New Zealand, and the store is still standing. Today, Kerikeri is known for its shops, the crafts, and places to eat. You'll definitely need a car.

This citrus farm grows organic fruit and a large bowl of the fruit is always available. The hostel is a large home, warm with wood panelling and kept spotlessly clean. You leave your shoes at the door and once you see the shining timber floors, you understand why. Even though the hostel is somewhat isolated from the major attractions, it is lively and full of young, active tourists. The owners are extremely friendly and offer excellent advice. They have a large number of books to share as well as puzzles and games. You will not find a television or movies at the farm hostel, but we did not miss them at all.

The one shower caused a bit of a backup in the morning. We learned to get up a bit earlier (or sleep a bit later). The beds are comfortable -- the clean sheets were put on the bed after we arrived, as if to demonstrate they are clean. We enjoyed staying at the Farm Hostel for several nights and making excursions to the northern tip of New Zealand, to Waitangi or to the giant kauri trees during the days. You will not find a place to stay that makes you feel more welcome.
