The Review

Villa Rose Backpackers is one of two hostels situated in the small town of Roxburgh. Most travelers in Roxburgh are just passing through, but if you plan on spending the night there, Villa Rose Backpackers is a great place to rest your weary feet.

The Location

Roxburgh is a small town in Central Otago, with a population of about six hundred people and is situated on the banks of the scenic Clutha River. The nearest big cities are Queenstown and Dunedin, both of which are less than a two-hour drive away. Like many places in New Zealand, there are many walking tracks -- long ones, short ones, easy ones, and challenging ones; one of the best is the Bullock Track, where you get rewarded with amazing views every step of the way. Villa Rose Backpackers is situated in the town centre, which is small town, containing a few tearooms, supermarkets, a small library, as well as the famous "Jimmy's Pies."

It is easy to find Villa Rose Backpackers whether you are driving or heading there by bus. The hostel is situated on the main road, which is linked to the state highway. Because the town is so small, you can get anywhere on foot.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are two dorm rooms (each containing six beds) and a twin room in the main house. Outside, there are two studio rooms with en suite bathrooms. The dorm rooms are rather spacious. Backpackers will not have to worry about finding space for their bags and suitcases. The rooms are clean and well kept. The main house has two bathrooms, both of which are pretty big for a small hostel. The showers are great! It's like taking a shower in a hotel room. There's lots of space to hang your clothes and definitely enough space to place all your toiletries. There's always more than enough hot water for everyone, so you won't have to worry about taking a shower on a cold winter's night!

Common Spaces

The highlight of Villa Rose backpackers is its living room -- the main living area consists of the kitchen and dining/lounging area. There is an elegant kitchen island counter separating the cooking area from the lounging area. Even at its full capacity, there is plenty of space for you to prepare your meals. There are two stoves, two fridges, a huge pantry, and two countertops. Cooking in Villa Rose Backpackers is always lively and fun, because even though everyone's around doing something, there's no clashing of elbows and bumping of heads.

Next to this main living area, a separate lounge has been partitioned off, containing a television as well as a fireplace; a bookshelf (for book exchange); and several couches, which makes it the place for tired travelers to retire to at the end of the day. Outside, there is a little yard and some benches, which is great for the summer! All the common areas are always kept clean and tidy. In fact, you will probably want to spend more time in the hostel than out of it!

Villa Rose Backpackers is a small, homey hostel. If you are thinking of getting a job in that area, this is a good place to live in and a good place to come home to after a hard day's work. Because it is small, you're bound to get to know your fellow backpackers well. It is a very beautiful, cosy hostel and an affordable one too! It's great for all travelers!
