Alpine Lodge Backpackers Reviews

Unfriendliest staff I've ever met! Got kicked out for no reason ...

I arrived at 11am, the hostel seemed deserted, only staff was there to clean. I couldn't check in until 12, which was fine with me, I left my bag in the luggage room and sat down in the lounge to pass some time, because I had to work from 12-5. Now here it comes, when I asked if I could have the wifi password, the guy in charge told me I can't have it until I've checked in ... he knew I'd have to work and I had given them my credit card details, so obviously I wasn't going to leave. he was so extremly unfriendly about it (not that he was the nicest to begin with) and this is how it went from then on. Me:"Can I please have it now, I just want to skype for 10mintes before I go to work" Guy: "You're not allowed to use any of the facilities." (As a joke) I said: "what about that table over there, am I allowed to use that?" (pointing to the place I had sat before). Guy: "Actually no, I am cleaning and you're in the way. You should really be waiting outside" (note that it was drizzling outside). Me: "Well am I theoretically allowed to cancel the reservation again, I thought it's fix?" Guy: "Yes sure, grab your bag" (taking the keys going to the luggage room). Me: "I said theoretically." Guy: "No I want you to leave now." Me: "Are you serious?" Guy:"Yes if you wanna argue, you can leave." so I left. Maybe he had a bad day but customer service and hospitality definitely sound different to me. the problem in Queenstown is that he'll get away with this terrible behaviour, at the end of the day he'll be booked out.

Wouldn't stay here

I first stayed here in 1998 when backpacking around NZ. I'm going back in December and I wanted to book this place as I remember it being great. When I enquired about a one night stay followed by a two night stay a week later after coming back from Milford I was not impressed by the cold response. I thought the response was rude and unprofessional, they didn't even have the manners to sign off on the e-mail. As a result it's put me off wanting to stay here so I have booked into another place that is far more welcoming and accommodating and know how to communicate with customers in a friendly manner.

Alpine Lodge is a nice and quiet place, conveniently located only a short walk away from the city center. Unless they have changed their staff, whether you feel comfortable or not unfortunately depends on the day of the week; the friendly, helpful, and all-knowing girl is there for most of the time though.

The Location

The hostel is located a short walk out of the city center, just up the road from where the buses arrive and an even shorter walk away from a nice and cheap supermarket. Parking is available out front. It's on a main street, but you won't hear noise and the view on the nearby mountains is quite pretty.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Rooms are spread through the downstairs as well as upstairs (these can be reached using outside stairs). You need the code to access the upstairs area, but people (including ourselves) keep forgetting to lock the rooms and no lockers are available inside. However, this is New Zealand -- it's safe! The two upstairs rooms (with six beds max) share one very neat and clean bathroom.

Common Spaces

The lounge with the cozy fireplace, which is lit whenever it is cold outside, also contains the TV, which is a turn-off for some and convenient for others. The downstairs and upstairs kitchens are each connected with the sitting areas that are well equipped and spacious enough for the few people who use them. Further, a long sideboard with several power points is provided upstairs. Free Wi-Fi, however, usually does not work.

This hostel is clean, calm, and convenient. We had a great first and overall impression and would definitely recommend to give Alpine Lodge a chance. We did have an issue with an unfriendly staff member -- after extending daily for a few days in a row with the friendly and incredibly helpful reception girl, the rather rude and stressed-out man entered our room half an hour before check-out time to ready it for new arrivals. It was a problem to have a laptop cable across one of the empty beds, it was a problem that we had not extended yet, and it was a problem that we would take another five minutes if we wanted to leave (he asked for "immediately," even though it was still ten minutes to 10, the official check-out time). "Just doing my job," was his excuse, but as we heard later, after moving to the place next door the room stayed empty that night. If you happen to meet the unfriendly man, it is easy to move to the slightly stuffier, but friendly next-door lodge or, in fact, anywhere else in town.

The wifi doesn't work well, but otherwise comfortable

I checked in here specifically for the free wifi, as it's not really any cheaper than any other hostel in the area. However, I couldn't get the wifi to work and neither could anyone else in my room until well into my second day there. And when it did connect, is was sometimes quite slow. Otherwise, the hostel is small and uncrowded and the common rooms are comfortable. I didn't interact much with the staff but I enjoyed the other travelers there. Very accessible location to the city centre as it's only a 3 minute walk outside of downtown.

Very unfriendly and below average

The two staff members are plain effortless in contributing towards offering you a pleasant stay and act as if they would rather not have you there at all!!!!! Very uninterested and unfriendly behavior towards the guests! I certainly don't appreciate getting told off in the middle of the night by a drunk staff member!! And expect to be treated in a helpful and contributing way towards my questions, as it should be in a hostel where people pay to stay! The mattresses are below average, the noise and light conditions in the rooms are below average, the kitchen facilities are average, the location is good. I wont be staying there again.

Great little place

Small, clean, cosy, and friendly with free Wi-Fi. Great place, loved Gary the cat.

Blah Accommodations, Staff Acts Like You're A Bother

The staff at this hostel was downright awful. AWFUL. They acted like our simple questions (can I buy a token for the laundry, are there any towels) were inconveniencing them to the highest degree. I would have been able to overlook this if not for the fact that the rooms, kitchen, and bathroom were blah as well. It reminded me of a dirty dorm. I would only stay here again if it was my absolute last resort and there were NO other options.

It was one of the cheapest and nicest hostels in Queenstown. I found the staff to be friendly and interesting and we ended up staying here for almost two weeks. It was absolutely spotless and had a really nice homely communal area. Stay here if you go to Queenstown! Wish i was still there!

A very cozy place. Lovely surroundings and location. Close to town and shops, nice and quiet area.

Small, clean and quiet, just as advertised. Staff were friendly and helpful. Highly recommended :)

Just a short stay but this is a very clean and quiet hostel in a great location. Tufty the manager was friendly and informative.

Taff was a fantastic host who was extremely helpful throughout. The kitchen system was well done and was easy to store our food. The beds were comfy and the rooms were warm. The bathrooms were freezing cold and the shower heads were very low.

Dirty especially the bathrooms, manager did not allow any visitors into the building at all, walls super thin so pretty noisy at night. Saving grace was the location.

Lovely hostel! Taff is a legend and puts his heart and soul in to this place.

Everything is in great condition and spotless

Geared up for those who prefer a chill atmosphere and a good night's sleep than the rowdiness you may find elsewhere.

Ended up staying 3 nights. Taff is very good. Cozy place. My favourite is the direct view of the Gondola. Heaps of free public parking spaces on the road.

There not really people around and the hostel staffs are a bit strange. They moved my stuff sometimes and left the dorm door open when I wasn't there so everyone could go in the room.

Just 3 free parking spots.

Alpine Lodge is one of the best hostels I've stayed in. If you're looking for somewhere quiet then this is place for you. The owner takes great care to ensure the safety and wellbeing of guests and staff alike. Great facilities and the kitchen is clean and well organised. Fantastic location. Town is just 5 minutes walk away but far enough to be away from any noise. Theres also a huge selection of free films in the lounge. I'd definitely stay here again.

Location and Contact

To get to Alpine Lodge -- heading into Queennstown town centre from Frankton -- go straight on at the first roundabout. Turn right at the second roundabout at the top of Shotover Street. Follow the road round to the left for a short distance. Just around the corner you will see a big yellow sign for Aspen Backpackers. Alpine Lodge is just next door.
