Jugendherberge Kiel Reviews

Try someplace else

Staying in Kiel doesnt leave you much choices of your accommodation. I chose this one because everything else seemed to be fully booked and it is "close" to the train station. I've must of over-read the term of not sleeping there unless you become a member of the youth hostel club. Anyway since i had no choice i did. And this way you pay an additional fee of 22,50 (or 11 (sth) at the end of the year) to become a member. Your temporary card will given to you the next morning and this is valid for the current month. The real (plastic) card is send to you afterwards. There is no possibility to not become one by paying an additional fee (at least for German citizens). And, nice to know, your club membership will automatically be extended by the end of the year. I heard one Guy saying that you can at least cancel your Membership via phone. Afterwards you'll get your Key to your room and your sheets. You have to prepare your own bed, the rooms are small, the beds are wooden but reinforced with iron for the slatted frame (below the mattress). Mattresses were pretty thin ... as much as the walls. You could easily hear people from the other rooms. Also if someone uses the bathroom facilities you can hear the water run by. 2 rooms share one toilet, one shower, and a room with two sinks. In the room there were only 2 sockets provided (4 beds) and a lamp for each bed. The balcony is a eye-catcher but only through the window because the doors are locked. The wifi is only available in the lobby and is pay only (4h for 1). I wasn't introduced to any common spaces (except for the breakfast area which is the lobby). Didn't find any either. Within the building theres an open space with loose chairs and table tennis. Some Lockers in my room were broken, they all were small and didnt seemed to withstand brute force at all. The doors are hard to open (heavy), noisy and snap in but not lock. The showers are hot but with an almost painful high pressure (for dirty kids i guess). There is also an curfew at 1 a.m. After 10 p.m. theres an demand only making noise at room level. Since this is the place all school classes use for there trips you should always expect kids running around and screaming. And the one and only thing i would like here was the breakfast ... if i didnt had to clean almost everything myself afterwards. The service for the paid money is not good (including the additional fees). The membership (in my opinion) is a rip off ... with the fact that it automatically extend itself. (with a good service the customers would come back on their own.) This place is nothing compared to what I am used to from other countries. I think you already figured out that i wouldnt recommend staying here at all. Rather go to Hamburg and take the 1h train ride for a day trip to Kiel.

Jugendherberge Kiel Reviews from the Web

The dorm was nice, everything clean and the location is actually pretty good because there's a bridge you can use to cross the river directly to the central station. The staff were great and will store your luggage securely for free.
