Tucan Hotel Reviews

Tucan Hotel is a cosy hostel with friendly owners, in a good location in the magical village of Uvita.

The Location

Uvita is a small village situated about halfway through on the way from San Jose to the Panamanian border. It doesn't take much to go around the village itself. A supermarket (expensive even for Costa Rican standards), a bakery, a few restaurants and bars, and other shops are all located a few minutes' walk away. The main bus stop is about a ten-minute walk away, however, if you are going south do ask around for the local buses. Although slightly longer this way, it is significantly cheaper. The area around the hostel feels quite safe, although you should take care of your belongings at the magnificent Whales Tail Beach. The beach as many as forty minutes away on foot, while there are treks towards the mountains, with a river and a couple of waterfalls on the way. Do ask the owners about more info on how to get there -- they seem eager to help.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are private rooms on offer, including a nicely set-up tree-house. Dormitories are quite small, but only have four beds each (two bunk beds). There are small fans for each bed and sufficient sockets. Most rooms are really well built, as there seems to be a natural breeze from the slight wind that usually exists in Uvita, which does seem to make a difference. Mattresses are in good condition. Try to avoid the rooms directly in front of the restaurant area, as they could be quite noisy, depending on the amount or type of guests.

There are two bathrooms -- one for women and one for men. Hot water is available although you should allow some time after the previous person for it to warm up again. All rooms and bathrooms seem to be cleaned regularly throughout the day and are in very good condition.

Common Spaces

As soon as you enter the hostel, you come across a nice garden with a couple of covered common areas, which are also the smoking areas. Further in, there is a sofa area with a couple of tables and various hammocks (also available for renting/sleeping -- make sure to bring a strong repellent as mosquitoes seem to be an issue in Uvita and the hostel in particular). Close to this, there is a small and functional common kitchen, while further in there is the reception/bar/restaurant area (with tasty food, even if slightly expensive for the average traveler). Then there is another small common area, which includes a quite old pool table, and another garden. In general, the setup and atmosphere the owners create (if/when they are there) make it easy meeting fellow travelers.

This hostel also offers a free shuttle to the beach (most days), free bikes, and free coffee. Overall, Tucan is a very good option to use as a base to explore Uvita.

Great place, if you have a hammock ask to sleep in the Casa del arbol (Tree House) like I did, its fantastic! This place has everything you need. The one disappointment there is that the lady who works there is horrible and rude. The new owners are lovely though, what a shame.

This is a great place! Planned to stay for one night but instead took the "stay five pay four nights" special. the new owners are really sweet and try to make your stay as good as it's possible. they are happy to show you what to do and their two boys will guide you to the waterfalls! really chilled mood and great surrounding! I can definitely recommend this place!

Tucan Hotel Reviews from the Web

Liked: There is a really chilled vibe at the hostel with hammocks to relax in. They also offer a free shuttle bus to the beach, which is about 4kms away. There are also some bikes for free use. The wifi worked well during our stay. Didn't like: The staff were not overly friendly and we received no tour of the place when we first checked in and were left wondering where everything was, including our room and had to ask the staff several times where things were. The mattresses on the beds (and sheets for that matter) need renewing as they are thin and can feel the planks. The individual fans are very noisy. There are no lockers at all. The kitchen is under equipped, you had to wait for others to finish using the bowls and spoons so that you could. The kitchen was also very busy during main meal times and limited room to sit as the restaurant takes up some of the area. There is only one female & male shower and toilet for the people staying in the dorms. Worst of all it was in the same space so if someone is in the shower you couldn't go to the toilet and on one of our nights the female toilet wasn't working so everyone had to use the one male toilet. I also didn't experience a hot shower at all during my stay.

Liked: the guests i met here are very nice. good atmosphere. location five mins walk from bus stop and supermarket. very clean. Didn't like: not very friendly staffs. only two bathroom for the whole hostel. very small and badly equiped kitchen. no locker....

Liked: Good hostel clean, cool layout. Didn't like: Staff gave us wrong info, ages from the beach.

Liked: The property was easily accessible by public transportation, which was a major plus for us. Didn't like: Background: We arrived post-Envision festival and the Hostel was fully booked. There is a possibility that customer service and accomodation are better in less busy times. However, I was extremely disappointed with the services that the hostel provided to their guests. Two things in particular: access to bathrooms and shuttle service to the beach.First- Bathrooms. This was the worst bathroom/guest ratio I have EVER seen in a hostel. There was 1 Mens bathroom and 1 Womens bathroom. A total of 2 bathrooms to service (at least) 30 guests! To make matters worse, the shower and the toilet were located together in the same room... so, when someone decided to take a 10 minute shower, everyone else was standing around with their legs crossed. I had to go to the grocery store in the morning to use the toilet. Unacceptable.Second- the 'free shuttle' to the beach. Upon arrival, we learned of a shuttle that was being organized to the beach and would be departing within 20 minutes. (This was a huge benefit for us, as the Hostel is located almost 2 miles from the beach). However, nearly an hour passed and no shuttle because the staff of Tucan could not get the vehicle. It was explained to us that it was high tide and we would be better to wait until the next day's shuttles. We ended up having to walk almost a half hour to the beach- which was gorgeous!

Liked: This was my first time to relax in 3 weeks and it was such a relaxing place for me just what i needed, also you are close to the supermarket, bank and bus stop. Didn't like: The rooms are very cramped, and you are quite some distance away from the beach.
