Langholmens Vandrarhem STF/HI Reviews

Good experience, but it's more a hotel then a youth hostel

Location -- 10 min afoot from the subway. A nice old prison reconverted into a hotel. The staff were professional. Clean bathroom and toilet. I had a room in the corridor with the museum, it's interesting to see it but a bit creepy to walk through during the night to go the bathroom. Small hiccup -- my access card didn't work anymore on the last night because a new roommate had moved in. Overall -- good experience, but it's more a hotel then a youth hostel.

I really enjoy my stay at this hostel very clean, staff excellent, relax atmosphere, the best hostel I stayed in so far, think it will be fantastic in the summer, I felt very safe. Very close to metro Hornstall would advise to buy the travel card, this can be use on buses and train and some of the boats.Beautiful scenery, worth a visit it might be the only experience of being in a prison.

Langholmens Vandrarhem STF/HI used to be a penitentiary for women and was not turned into a hostel until the Twentieth Century. The restoration of the facility is amazing. The facility may be difficult to find, but it is worth it. It is the main attraction on Lngholmen Island. There is a museum within the facility that is free to all guests. In order to access the museum, which is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., you must request the key code from the reception staff.

The rooms are not meant for more than two people. Some rooms come equipped with a private bathroom with a shower and color television with free cable channels. In the hallway, there are tables where you can relax or even play checkers and/or chess. There is no lock-out, which is a plus. Breakfast is offered at this hostel for an additional cost, just inquire at the front desk. There is a restaurant and an Irish pub within the hostel walls. The bathrooms, both the private and the shared facilities, are very clean and well kept.

Upon arrival, you will be asked if you desire to clean your own room before departure -- self-cleaning will save you some money. If you do not have a HI card, you may purchase one there for a fee -- if not, you will be charged an additional fee. The staff is very professional and courteous. They may be able to direct you to current events or give traveling information. If you are looking for an upscale hostel, this is your place.

Ok so the location is not great for central stockholm. However it's only a few minutes away on the underground, and it's waterfront location is stunning, especially at sunset. The cell rooms are comfy and have their own shower and toilet. Reception are efficient if not overly friendly. Had a good stay here.

It's a fantastic place. Nice and clean and comfortable. Breakfast was great, staff were helpful and there was quite literally a little beach right outside the door. An extremely nice place and very interesting, too. I stayed in the museum section and really loved the little exhibits. My only complaint was the distance from Stockholm proper... but the walk along the lake to Gamla Stan was beautiful and made the distance worth it.

I didn't stay in one of the prison cells, but in one of the regular rooms. The staff was not out-going or friendly, but they were professional and answered your questions. The area is really beautiful. Lakes abound with tons of trees. The location is nice, but it's quite a distance from the city center. I would not mind staying at this hostel again, although I would go to one that's closer to the city center for convenience. Recommended.

Accommodation in the ex-prison cells has a novelty which adds to the character of this hostel. Breakfast, which is an optional extra (750Kr when I was there) seems expensive, considering that throughout Europe most breakfasts are free. But the breakfast here is not just a breakfast--it is a BANQUET, with such a variety of different cheeses, meats, cereals and a even choice of type of eggs and degrees to which they are boiled. The best part of all is this hostel's scenery. It is situated on an island attached to the mainland by a bridge, and the views are something special to behold--spectacular to the extreme. The main minuses are the cells, which are pretty drab and basic but have character, and the staff, who are inconsistent in their degrees of helpfulness and manners. Though definitely this is a place worth visiting.

The Långholmen Youth Hostel is the most captivating in Stockholm. It offers accommodationin the original, but now freshly renovated, prison cells in what used to be the Crown Prison. Built in the 1840s, it served as a prison until 1975, when the last convict left the island. Accommodation is in well-equipped cells with two to four bunks. As a member of the Swedish Touring Club (STF), you qualify for a price reduction. On weekdays in the winter, we have 26 beds available -and more if necessary. In the summer season, from 25 June to 15 August, and at weekends and on public holidays during the rest of the year, we can offer more beds in well-equipped cells with two to four bunks. Most cells have their own shower and WC. For more information please look at our website
