Guesthouse Naramachi is situated in a traditional Japanese building in a quiet neighborhood within walking distance of nearly all the local attractions. Its clean, run by friendly owners who give suggestions on things to do that arent likely to be in a guidebook, and has great Wi-Fi. There is no TV and kitchen facilities are limited. The building is well maintained and the beds are comfortable. The area for removing and storing shoes has a bench and ample space to maneuver, even when multiple people are entering or exiting. Bicycles are available for rent. Luggage storage is on a set of shelves near the front door. Entrance at night requires use of a security code and the area feels safe at all hours.
On a quiet street in the charming area of Naramachi, the hostel is convenient to sightseeing, restaurants, and a grocery store. Walking from the JR Nara station with backpacks would be a long, hilly, and possibly confusing walk, as few streets have signs. But its an easy walk from the JR Kyobate station -- only one stop away from the JR Nara station, and you must change trains at Nara to reach Kyobate. If you're armed with a good map from the hostel, its an easy walk into Nara to see the deer, temples (including the bug Buddha), gardens, and shrines.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are clean and simple with space for bags and curtains to close off your bunk for privacy or to keep the light out. The walls are thin, so quiet is requested after 11 p.m., but if someone is snoring in a neighboring room, ear plugs may be desirable. Strong fast Wi-Fi reaches even the furthest dorm room and theres an outlet at the head of each bunk along with a reading light. The bathrooms are clean, and although there are only two bathroom areas, we never had to wait as the sinks, toilets, and showers are separated. The shower area includes a basket and hooks for keeping a towel, clothes, and other possessions dry while a shelf in the shower itself provides space for your own toiletries. Shampoo and body wash are provided, as is the use of a hairdryer. The bathrooms are clean and separate slippers are provided for the toilet areas.
There are two rooms on the ground floor for eating, using the desktop computer, socializing, or otherwise relaxing. The front room has a refrigerator; coffee- and tea-making facilities (both provided); storage areas for food, dishes, and a microwave. Full cooking is not an option but the nearby supermarket has prepared meals available at reasonable prices and a number of restaurants are nearby. The back room, adjacent to the owners private space, is quite simple, with only a large table and a few stools. The building itself has great character and a sense of calm is instilled throughout.
Guesthouse Naramachi is a nice hostel in a unique building. Its a bit of a hike from the JR Nara station but so are the areas attractions, so at one time or another, youll have to put some distance between yourself and the towns main train station. Its clean and a bit quiet so not the place for partying but excellent for a solid nights sleep. The owners English is very good and hes happy to share his ample knowledge of the area with guests.
