Hostal Puripica

The Review

Hostal Puripica is a quieter alternative to central San Pedro, most suitable for self-reliant travelers looking to unwind for a few days. It offers basic rooms within a relaxed atmosphere, run by a friendly and accommodating host family who live next door. They offer you privacy but are always on hand to help ... just knock!

The Location

The hostel is a ten-minute walk from the centre of San Pedro, where you can find all amenities, including ATMs, small supermarkets, restaurants, and tour agencies. The main road for most bus company pick-ups and drop-offs is eight minutes' walk away, where you can also find cheap food stalls and basic restaurants. Puripica is situated on the edge of a peaceful housing area for local residents, set back from all main roads, without the bustle and advertising boards of central San Pedro. A view of Volcán Licancabur can be enjoyed at its entrance.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There is one dorm room available, which has a shared bathroom just along the outside corridor, with a modern clean shower, toilet, and basin. Hot water and pressure are abundant. The dorm is small, sleeping four people on either single beds or bunks. With just one window, it appears dark but is warm on cold evenings. Other than two side tables and power points, there are no extra features in the dorm. It is well positioned to avoid noise from the common areas. Other rooms are doubles (large matrimonial or twin) with private or shared bathroom. Some include side tables, side lights, and wardrobe. The rooms' furniture is faded but spotless and cleaned with a smile if needed. Security is not guaranteed as room windows cannot be secured from the inside, however the host family will look after valuables.

Common Spaces

Puripica's cosy kitchen offers a gas stove and oven, fridge, sink, and basic utensils for cooking, although cutlery is minimal. There is a large dining table and chairs. The price of breakfast is only included for double rooms and not dormitories; it consists of juice, tea/coffee, toast with spreads, cheese, and ham. If you have an early start, it will be left for you in the fridge. The kitchen doors lead outside to a small, sunny courtyard, where there is a table and bench, extra seating, and some plants to spruce up the cement brick wall. There is an additional shaded area leading off the courtyard with a dining table and soft seated chairs, although none for true lounging comfort.

The office has a computer station, and the Wi-Fi signal is best accessed from here, where you can relax on the sofa. There is no TV and no social activities on offer, but trips to all key excursions can be booked through the hostel. The hostel offers laundry service. The common areas are not cleaned frequently so can be a bit rough around the edges from time to time, especially the kitchen facilities.

Guests are free to come and go as they choose, and local information is provided at check-in. Rooms and bathrooms are clean, common areas less so. This hostel offers a pleasant, calming stay away from town for those who don't need luxury and don't like pandering.

Amazing 4 night stay!!
I had a wonderful stay at Hostal Puripica!!! Jana was a wonderful host!! Great breakfasts, wifi and tours!! Everything I wanted was here. It's about a pleasant 5 minute walk in to town. I would a 1000% recommend a stay here!!!
Clean and friendly
Very friendly and helpful staff. Good, clean and hot shower. Like most chilean low budget hostals with some little flaws. Amazing view of 6 or more volcanoes right in front of the hostal. It was a bit outside of town (about 7-10 minutes) but the walk at night gave you the time to admire the incredible sky.
