Among the many backpacker choices around the city centre area, Mountain Manor backpackers really stands out as one of the best value options.
Located on the very quiet Breda Street, just fifteen minutes' walk from the city centre, it's close enough to the action without being within earshot of it, so you can have your party and get a peaceful night's sleep afterwards.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is a selection of twin and double rooms and dorm rooms of between four to twelve beds. The downstairs twelve-bed dorm is spacious with good mattresses and warm duvets and each bed has a cage for luggage under the bottom bunk. You'll need quite a large padlock to secure it, though. There are shutters on the windows, so you won't be woken up by the rising sun. The common toilets and hot water showers are clean and there are plenty of towels provided.
The sitting room and bar area is comfortable with a good selection of beers, spirits, and cold drinks, and there's a pool table. A smaller sitting room next to it has DSTV and there is free Wi-Fi throughout the house. The common kitchen is the best equipped kitchen we've seen so far in South Africa. There are two kettles, two toasters, three microwaves, and two fridges plus a cooker and a long dining table. Free tea and coffee are available all day, but breakfast is not included in the price. Rubbish is separated and recycled here also. In the courtyard, there are tables and chairs for sitting out, as well as a braai (BBQ). There is plenty of information and lots of guesthouse leaflets on display in the lobby to help plan your next moves.
Although a little more expensive than the real cheapies, Mountain Manor is worth the extra money, as it's certainly one of the best hostels we've seen in South Africa. It's convenient for the city centre and there is a supermarket just ten minutes' walk away for those self-catering, as well as a sprinkling of restaurants. The staff work hard to keep the whole house clean and the extra care certainly shows. Although this is a very quiet, safe, residential street, the house is accessed by key fob for security, for which you pay a refundable deposit. This is not really a party place -- stay on Long Street for that -- but for those looking for a more gentle stay in Cape Town, this fits the bill perfectly.

I've spent one of my best time in this Lodge (1994 and 1996) and met some wonderful people there -- with some of them I'm still in touch. I hope the new owners appreciate all the hard work we put in to make this Lodge as special as it was and kept a bit of the spirit as it has. Most of the people at that time stayed there for a couple of months and it was a big family.

i've been around the world for seventeen years, ninety-four-odd countries, and i came to the lodge first time in 1994. It was just starting of then, the place became magic after all that hard work and sweat throughout the years from all the travelers that got stuck there. I lived there for months, made friends, and we all rebuilt the place and had the best times on this planet. i visit throughout the years up to 2000, from all the places and hostels i been this was the best. the management and owners were amazing spiritual people. it's a shame that it all had to end like this. i wish them all the best, and the new owners luck in this beautiful restored old house.

Oak Lodge has just been sold!! and the new owners will be cleaning it up and starting afresh. Please do come and see how much better it has become.
We tried three different backpackers in Cape Town and we ended in this cool place! It is certainly the best place to stay in Cape Town!! The old house is beautiful and the people extremely friendly and helpful! Don't hesitate!
Great hostel. I would love to visit again.
This place is a mess! When we were there in January, the organization of this place went to pot. The bar was never open, the door was always locked, the manager was usually stoned and when it came to us wanting to leave, there was nobody there for three days to give us our passports. DO NOT GO HERE!
This place had very nice people, and it's a wonderful place in the middle of everything. Special thanks to Johnathan for everything (I hope I spelled the name okay!). Sabina and Gideon
It's a wonderfully eclectic place. The lodge is wholly unique. If you don't enter with an open mind, it may seem a bit strange. It's not a BUSINESS; it's special, it's for creative souls. I wish I'd never left. Please check it out, you won't regret it. It's a treat for the traveler.
This Lodge has been upgraded to a very upmarket Oak Lodge Residence.
It is situated at the foot of Table Mountain, just above the hustle and bustle of the city, but walking distance into the city.
It hosts 33 beds, a beautiful outside deck looking up to Table Mountain, a wonderful entertainment room with pool table, pub and FREE internet, washing and drying facilities, new showers with very hot water.
It also offers upgrade options to the Guest House or Self-catering apartments for those that want time on their own.
We also offer breakfasts if required but the kitchen is set up for self-catering with cooking and storing facilities.
We offer a travel desk facility for those that wish to travel further.
Payment is strictly upfront and credit cards can be used.
