Punakaiki Beach Hostel offers a cozy and familiar atmosphere in modern, very well-maintained and clean buildings in a breathtaking location. It is a great base for outdoor activities or a visit to the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes.
The hostel is comprised of two buildings. The main one is located right on the beach on the amazing Punakaiki Coast. You can hear the waves from your room and have the most amazing views of sunsets from the balcony. However, the smallest building is in a side street, about five minutes' walk from the beach. It is really not obvious when you make the reservation that there are two buildings and that your bed can be in either.
The hostel is in an ideal location for any activities in Punakaiki. It is about fifteen minutes' walk from the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes, tourist information centre, DOC centre, and cafes one way and ten minutes from the start of hikes, a canoe hire, and amazing beaches on the other. There are no shops in Punakaiki and public transportation is limited to the odd coach.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The whole design and style of the hostel is attractive and upbeat; the rooms are modern and creatively furnished, but use as many natural elements as possible. The colours are happy -- in most bedrooms there is a sink, and apart from the campervan, which could do with a bit of a redecoration, the buildings and furniture are well maintained. There are several types of rooms available -- dorms of different sizes, doubles, a sleepout, and a romantic campervan. Most beds are bunks, but there are some single beds, too. The bathrooms are really modern and clean -- there is always plenty of liquid soap and toilet paper.
There is a really nice, spacious kitchen with a dining area in both houses. It is modern, extremely clean and really well equipped with various useful things and sugar, oil, tea, coffee, and spices for everybody to use. Herbs can be collected in the little herb garden near the reception. However, most furniture is made of wood, there is only one sofa in one building and none in the other, so it's not too comfortable for just chilling. A few boardgames and books are available for use.
There is a huge balcony with a table and a few chairs from where you can watch the waves or the sunset, which is an ideal place for a picnic. Freshly baked bread and muffins are available at the reception at a reasonable price.
It is definitely great value if you like a cozy place with few guests and a more relaxing and less party-oriented location. The premises are really tidy and clean, the bathrooms and kitchens are spotless. The whole place is creative and modern, but at the same is in good harmony with the natural environment. The only downside is that you might not end up on the beach as the name suggests, because the second building is not on the beach.
