Amazing!
I was lucky enough to be able to enjoy some time here. The staff, other travelers, scenery, and amazing atmosphere made my time in New Zealand that much better!
Getting to River Valley Lodge is easy. Once you turn off from the tar road and onto the dirt road it takes about another thirty to sixty minutes to get there, depending on how quick you drive on the windy road.
The lodge is situated in a valley right next to the river. The location is spectacular, but remote and apart from the lodging there is nothing else around. This is a party place with a great atmosphere, but it is also noisy styaing in the main building.
The buidlings are very new and include a main building, and dorms on the outside of the main building and loose standing cabins. The main building consists of the kitchen, the lounge dining area, and the double rooms. The double rooms are very noisy as they are situated right above the bar/lounge area. So if you want a quieter evening, definitely get thte cabins outside or the dorms. The double rooms are really modern and cosily decorated (pity that they are so noisy)
The bathrooms are co-ed. They seem also to be half-outdoor bathrooms as those who do the white water raffting also change and shower here afterwards. They are functional, have hot water, and feel like camping toilets. They are also far from some of the rooms.
The communal kitchen is small, but the main kitchen serves great homecooked meals, and if you are stying for a night or two this is worth having. The facilities include a golf course, and you can rent clubs from reception. There is a walking trail to a waterfall, but it was a bit overgrown. You are right at the river's edge so you're near a great place to relax and swim in the river.
And of course the white water rafting is awesome. They also offer horseriding.
I think about this place all the time. There isn't another location like it. I stopped here with Kiwi Experience and everyone was so welcoming. Venturing out at nighttime with an unspoiled sky and the sounds of the river just takes your breath away. I was lucky enough to stay in one of the cabins. If you're going to treat yourself at all on your trip for a night or so, then this is the place to do it! The horse trekking is fantastic, too. It's an absolutely stunning place I just wish I'd stayed there longer.
I fell in love with this place. I skipped Australia to stay there longer. I miss it so much already. Definitely the best destination in New Zealand. The people are amazing!
This place is so beautiful, I can't wait to go back. The people are so nice and the view is GREAT.
This was a nice place to stay. It was very fun.
It was love at first sight -- I stayed for seven weeks!! This lodge has a beautiful location, beautiful food and excellent rafting and riding.
