Rooms were not clean

Dorm type room not clean especially the woman's room. Very poor service by the staff. Will not recommend anyone to stay there.

I enjoyed much my journey ...

... maybe because the hospitality was great! From the reception to the kitchen all was very useful. Peoples was so friendly. Beautiful the rooms on the first floor. If I'll be back to Perth, sure I'll reserve a new stay!

Clean, quiet, convenient, friendly

I find this place nice, quiet, and clean. I understand that the management has been changed and the Manager in Charge is very friendly! We have now became friends. i like the simple clean facilities. kitchen is ok. with Internet access, I personally find it is a good deal. transport is so convenient. Just cross the road, and there are free inner city shuttle bus to bring us around!

Welcoming, spacious, and reasonable rates

We stayed here for four months last year. It was the best value and ten minute walk to City centre. The hostel was well managed -- we felt safe. The only problem was it could have been more cleaner, we got cleaning products ourselves to "blitz" the room! Other than this we were happy. I would recommend this hostel. The manager at the time was very good and we became friends!

Guy who runs need to take a look at what he wants out of life!

This was a great spot for town, Nice pool, Clean. One problem was the guy that runs it obviously hates backpackers! Possibly not the best vocation for him then!

Had a good time here. Got off to a shaky start but after a couple of weeks met some interesting people. This was a pretty dodgy place when I was there though, a load of miners and the owners were physically fighting most nights. However it was strangely appealing. Full of either scum bags or brilliant people. Really cheap, close to town and there's a decent supermarket and BWS next door.

the hostel was ok but did lack a bit of atmosphere however the really big problem was that the aussie night manager was a real arse who was really rude when he got pissed and made life very unpleasant for the guests. when you are travelling and paying to stay in these places you should be treated with a bit more respect, i hope that idiot has gone now.

I stayed here in 2003 and it was the best. I met loads of good mates and it was so handy to town!! But the night manager is a grumpy guy. Also I shared a room with a psycho. Don't worry though, she is long gone and all hostels have their nutters.

stuffs are so nice, and its clean and cheap.

Location perfect, so near CBD

Really recommend here for backpackers or traveler!

No wifi available if you check in after 9pm.. would've been nice to know it as I wouldn't have booked it had I known.

One of the cheapest places to stay in Darwin so I wasnt surprised that it was pretty minimal. It had everything we could have needed. The room was a bit hot and bunk beds were squeaky but for a night passing through Perth it did the job

Great lovely people comfy beds

Good facilities, clean, quiet environment. I would stay here again (:

Well located hostel, a little dirty and the atmosphere was a little stiff, all in all we had a good stay though

Liked: an old hostel, clean, good location need deposit for borrowing utensil, blankets not provided, need to rent for 2aud Didn't like: Night manager not very helpful

Great location and very kind staff

Liked: Very Clean Place, with pool in the courtyard. Friendly and helpful staff - nice place. And it's very close to the city centre, with (free buses) bus stop just outside the hostel. Didn't like: Nothing

Liked: They provide private rooms with bathroom for a decent price, the toilet is next door so no problem, the rooms are clean, no insects or bad bugs. The hostel is not a party place, you can sleep and get rest. We arrived very early from Europe and the receptionist booked us into another room so we could get some sleep immediately, thanks, this was great. Didn't like: The public areas are filthy. I cleaned half of a table myself and we took breakfast there every morning. When we left the other half was still dirty. Nobody bothered to clean the chairs and the kitchen isn't the cleanest either. The pool is ok but the opening hours make no sense, disturbing.

Liked: no thing Didn't like: the air conditioning system was working only at night and it was off during hot summer days, the rooms not clean and tidy.

Liked: good location, handy for work, coule of decent pubs in the area, lovely building with huge potential Didn't like: Question, What's the difference between God and Hay St backpacker owner? Answer, God does'nt think he's a Hay St backpacker owner.

Liked: Nothing Didn't like: I've been staying in hostels for the past 2 months and have never come across anything like this. When arrived, nobody at reception. When the manager did arrive he was rude and charged me in GBP instead of AUD even though I requested to be charged in AUD, because he wanted to make money on exchange. The linen stank. Used cottonbud in my bed. Toilets and bathroom disgusting. Hair everywhere, razor on floor, dirt and grime. Was so disgusted unable to stay there, requested refund for the nights I wasn't going to stay, was refused. All in all, an awful experience. One to avoid.

Fantastic bunch of people staying there at the moment.

Liked: I like the location, it's quiet but still in good distance to the city with the red cat right at the door. Nice restaurant near also. Staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. Didn't like: Some of the backpackers don't have much respect for other people staying there. It would have been nice if a cleaner came through on the weekend as so many people used the toilets over the weekend, by sunday night there was no toilet paper and the toilets were pretty unclean.

Hay St. Backpackers is "The pick of inner-city hostels. This place has excellent facilities." (Lonely Planet, 2002).
