If you are looking for a change of pace in your backpacking experiences, look no further than Lucas -- a small village in central Ohio that exists due to local farming. Despite its size, there is plenty to do in the surrounding area that is worth the visit. Johnny Appleseed, the famous pioneer tree planter, was very involved with the Lucas area and visited many times, so surely modern-day pioneer backpackers will enjoy the beauty of this area as well.
Malabar Farm is a popular destination that is part state park campground, part working farm. Parts of the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" were filmed at this location. Here you can hike the miles of trails; tour the farm and farmhouse; or schedule your trip around one of their many events, such as a barn dance, an art and craft show, a holiday tour, or a workshop class. Across the street from Malabar Farm is the historic Malabar Farm Restaurant, which serves traditional country food. Near this you can also hike or drive up Mount Jeez. The summit offers a view over much of the Lucas area.
In the area surrounding Lucas, you can find several golf courses, as well as Pleasant Hill Lake, Charles Mill Lake, and Mohican State Park. These are ideal areas for photography, hiking, geocaching, fishing, and other outdoor activities. For those willing to put in an hour's drive, central Ohio also offers big industrial cities, historical towns, and Amish country. Staying in a hostel in Lucas, Ohio, is a unique way to get away from the city while enjoying a taste of all that the rural area has to offer!
