L’Escala is a town in the comarca (county) of Alt Emporda in Girona, Catalonia. Its location at the tip of Alt Emporda makes it an important fishing harbor in the region; the economic life and industry here has its roots in fishing. There is a festival here that commemorates fish, especially anchovies; most of the stores and building still have an anchovy symbol on their doors. With the construction of the marina and development of resorts, L’Escala has since become a vacation destination and its economy is now based on tourism. The Catalan seaside town is known for its quiet life and attractions.
L’Escala has a historical site, the Alfoli de la Sal (Storehouse of the Salt), also known as the Posit Vell (Old Sediments), which was a storeroom that stocked salt for preserving the fish caught here. This seventeenth-century building is now a protected historic-artistic site, a standing monument to L’Escala’s past and economic importance. L’Escala is also famous for its old fortifications; watchtowers; defenses; and castles, including the Five Keys Castle, Tower of Montgo Perxel, and the Stone Towers of the Parliament. Even the old cemetery and graveyard for sailors is a tourist attraction.
Another important and most valued point interest is a former Greco-Roman colony of Empuries. Empuries, or Emporion, means “trade.” The ruins composed of various complexes or polis. Only a small part of the archeological site is excavated and the finds reveal that the place started even before the arrival of Greeks and Romans.
L’Escala is suitable for tourists and visitors who want either to relax on its pristine beaches and resorts or to visit the old structures of the town.
