Calitzdorp, South Africa, is a farming town on the beautiful touristic highway Route Sixty-Two. The main reasons to visit Calitzdorp are the vineyard, the wine tasting, and the hiking.

Calitzdorp is located along the road from Cape Town to Oudtshoorn and is about fifty kilometres from Oudtsdorp. The scenery from each direction is stunning. The area has more sun hours, less tourism, and is much cheaper than South Africa's south coast. Calitzdorp is a small town that can easily be covered by foot. It is worth visiting because of its vineyards where you can taste the wine that they produce. The tasting comes at a very reasonable price and you can buy a bottle of the ones you like the most to bring back home or give away as a present. Unlike most other places in South Africa, Calitzdorp and the company De Krans are both in South Africa and are internationally famed for port wine. There is even a designated trail through the vineyards that you can walk.

Getting tipsy while tasting all the port and wine is not the only activity you can do in Calitzdorp. The mountains that surround the town make a good destination for hiking. There are several trails nearby that are worth checking out. The Swartberg is also close to Calitzdorp and give better hiking opportunities. You might encounter some wildlife on your hikes such as the wildebeest. However, there are no carnivores in the region, so walking outside is safe.

Currently your options for hostels in Calitzdorp, South Africa are very limited.; there are also several other places that accommodate travelers, but they do offer private rooms only. As Calitzdorp is a small town, the location of your Calitzdorp, South Africa hostel should not be a big deal as everything in town is nearby. Distance-wise you might as well book a hostel in Oudtshoorn, but keep in mind that you may not want to or be allowed to drive back after the wine tasting, and that public transport to Oudtshoorn is limited.
