Pretty Ankaran is situated on Slovenia’s Adriatic coast, just five kilometres from the border with Italy. Historically, this region changed hands several times between the Italian and Hapsburg empires, and later post-war Yugoslavia, so there’s a strong Italian influence.
From the early twentieth century, Ankaran gained a reputation as a health resort, as well as being the site of several convalescent homes for people with lung diseases, Ankaran became a place where people came to benefit from the warm weather and waters. A former convalescent home for sick children today houses the famous Valdotra Orthopaedic Hospital, which specialises in sports injury therapies.
While Ankaran itself is very small, it is a great choice for travelers looking for a peaceful holiday surrounded by natural beauty. This Mediterranean landscape is popular with cyclists and hikers, and should you wish for more distractions, the historic Venetian port towns of Izola, Piran, and Koper are all within easy reach while glamorous Portoroz is the place to go and watch rich Russians at play. The famous stud farm at Lipica, which supplies the Lippizaner horses for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, is also a short drive away.
Ankaran is a popular spot for swimmers but there are no sandy beaches, just pebbles or concrete jetties. The St. Nicolas resort, however, offers the opportunity to bathe more comfortably and is worth visiting just to see the twelfth-century monastery, which was converted in the twenties into a hotel and leisure complex.
A range of Ankaran hostel accommodation is available, including shared dorms with kitchens and bathrooms, or private singles and doubles. Alternatively, hostel accommodation can be found in the other coastal towns of Koper, Izola, and Piran all of which are only a short distance from Ankaran.
