Roxburgh is a town in the Central Otaga region of New Zealand. It is about forty kilometers south of its nearest, larger city, Alexandra. Located in the Teviot Valley of the country, the town is bordered by the River Clutha. It is surrounded by mountains, adding to the picturesque quality of Roxburgh. It is known for its fruit production, as well as some of the recreational activities available in and around town, including water-based sports like swimming.
Looking for a hostel in Roxburgh is easy enough. There are not many in the area, but you are bound to find a few near the city center. The hostels are clean, affordable, and easy to live in. You can expect English to be spoken at them. There are amenities, like consistent hot water, in the hostels. The owners are friendly and welcoming to all travelers.
The hostels have a view of the mountains surrounding the town, including the Old Man Range to the west of it. These mountains are as much a part of the town’s history as they are a part of its scenery. The first gold miners in the area came over the mountains to settle on the banks of the river in the 1860s. A few years after they arrived, the local orchards were planted. Today, you can visit these orchards or buy their produce on the side of the road.
Around the town, there is much to see and do, including swimming in Lake Onslow, found east of the town. You can also fish on the lake. There are fishing competitions held throughout the season. To the north, you will find the hydroelectric dam and a village next to it. The lake, dam, and the village are historically rich, having been built in the 1950s. You can learn more about the history of Roxburgh and the surrounding region at the museum in town.
