Herceg Novi, Montenegro, is a small coastal town located at the entrance of Kotor Bay and at the foot of Mount Orjen. Many tourist chose to skip Herceg Novi in favour of heading to Kotor or Budva, but spare a thought for this charming town. Herceg Novi has a lot to offer visitors and it comes with the added bonus of having fewer tourists than other destinations in Montenegro.

Prior to the Yugoslav wars, Herceg Novi was actually a major tourist destination, prized for the health benefits of its natural spas. Today it is still possible to visit these natural mineral water spas or even indulge in Igaljsko Blato (healing sea mud) treatment. Just head four kilometres west of the city to Igalo -- getting there is easy; simply walk or take a taxi or a local bus.

Herceg Novi also boasts several gorgeous beaches. The best beaches in the Herceg Novi area are found in Igalo; beaches here have crystal blue water and long stretches of golden sand coast. Otherwise many boat tour companies offer travelers day trips to Luštica Peninsula, which is just opposite Herceg Novi. Beaches here are spectacular -- check out Mirište or Žanjic Beach.

One of Herceg Novi's greatest tourist attractions is undoubtedly its pretty Stari Grad (old town), which features a castle originally built in the fourteenth century by a Bosnian king Forte Mare. It's the centrepiece of the Stari Grad.

Stari Grad is also where you will find most guesthouses and hostels in Herceg Novi, Montenegro. It is also possible to find a few budget accommodation options closer to the hot springs. Hostels in Herceg Novi, Montenegro, tend to be well located and have excellent facilities. You can expect many Herceg Novi, Montenegro hostels and guesthouses to offer a guest kitchen, Wi-Fi, comfy rooms, and sometimes meals.

Getting to and from Herceg Novi is easy. As it is located along the major tourist route, between Dubrovnik in Croatia and Kotor in Montenegro. Buses run between these locations constantly, just be sure to ask to get off at Herceg Novi.
