Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius and its only city with a metropolitan atmosphere. If you want to get away from the touristy beaches, spend some time experiencing the authentic Mauritian life in Port Louis.
On the west coast between resort towns lies Mauritius' vibrant Port Louis. Although the city is not very big, it can feel like a busy African metropolis. Especially compared to all the beach towns, this city seems very hectic. Nonetheless, it is an interesting place to visit during your stay in Mauritius.
There are currently very few hostels in Port Louis, but the city easily can be visited during a day trip from a nearby destination. The major beach town of Grand Baie is only a 30-minute bus ride away, while Flic en Flac is only 45 minutes away. So you might as well stay in a hostel in one of those beach villages. If you prefer to remain in the capital, however, you can choose from a few Port Louis hostels and budget accommodations.
The capital is definitely a good place for shopping in Mauritius. There are plenty of shops in the city centre with lower prices than in any of the beach towns. The market is also worth a visit. Apart from the basic variety of fruits, vegetables and goods, this is a great place to find souvenirs as well as try some of the typical Mauritian snacks and dishes.
If you have the chance to visit Port Louis on a Saturday, then the horse racing events at Champ de Mars are a must-visit. The races can be attended for free, or you can buy a ticket for the stand. It is the oldest horse racing track in the Southern Hemisphere. Watching the crowd cheering for the horse they put their bets on is a unique experience.
