Mauritius is an island nation and primarily known for its beaches. However, its town of Chamarel offers a different attraction for visitors. It's a base to explore some of Mauritius’ spectacular landscape and Africa's wonders. The seven-colored earth is a must-see for everyone visiting the island before tasting the Mauritian rum at the distillery.
While many tourists visit Chamarel's highlights during a day trip from one of the resorts on the island, the real outdoor lovers need more than a day to explore Chamarel and the surrounding region. Several hiking paths lead into the Black River Gorges National Parks. Spectacular views over the gorges, waterfalls and exotic wildlife can be seen when taking one of the trails. The sacred Grand Bassin is an important place of pilgrimage for Hindus. One kilometer from Chamarel is also a rum distillery. Visitors can take a tour to see how the beverage is produced and taste the differently flavored rums. On request, it's also possible to try the rums without taking a tour.
The most popular attraction in Chamarel is the Seven Colored Earth. Due to volcanic activity, the earth contains several colors and is unique in the world. In the same park, a 100-meter high waterfall and giant turtles can be seen as well as fruit orchards and coffee plantations.
For a completely different type of attraction, you can go see the Curious Corner of Chamarel. Here you will find an exhibition of optical illusions as well as a restaurant to enjoy at a leisurely pace. Be sure to bring your camera in order to capture some of the hidden illusions.
Due to the big distances, it is strongly recommended to rent a car, motorbike or bike from the hostel. Cabs are also available to take you around the area.
Hostels in Chamarel are scarce. To avoid disappointment, it is recommended to book a hostel prior to arrival. Since Chamarel is small and contains several shops and restaurants, it is an ideal town to settle into a hostel and use it as a base from where to explore the surrounding area.
