Taman Negara, Malaysia, is a beautiful, one-hundred-thirty-million-year-old rainforest, only five hours from the capital Kuala Lumpur. A national park with plenty of boardwalk circuits and wildlife, away from the hectic cities on the coast. It's a national park with plenty of boardwalk circuits and wildlife, away from the hectic cities on the coast.
The name Taman Negara National Park can be quite confusing. Taman Negara means National Park in Malaysian. As the largest national park in mainland Malaysia, it has kind of adopted this as its name. Taman Negara is sometimes referred to as Kuala Tahan National Park, too. Kuala Tahan is also the name of the small town at the south entrance of the park. This entrance is used my nearly all visitors and if you want to book a hostel in Taman Negara, Malaysia, you will probably want to stay in Kuala Tahan. Kuala Tahan is the centre base to start your Taman Negara experience. There are many boardwalk circuits through the park that start across the river from Kuala Tahan, as well as canopy walks if you like to see the rainforest from above.
Once in Kuala Tahan, it is easy to explore Taman Negara by yourself by following the boardwalk circuits. No guides are required for this; navigating is easy and maps are available from the park office or your Taman Negara, Malaysia hostel. For the more adventurous, there are also jungle trekkings that last several days. For this, a guide is recommended and your Taman Negara, Malaysia hostel may be able to help you with this.
Another interesting organized activity is a night walking safari, where a guide will help you to spot nocturnal wildlife. Expect to see birds, snakes, and -- if you are lucky -- a leopard cat. If you like fishing, buy a fishing permit and try to catch one of the three hundred fish species that live inside the Taman Negara National Park. There are a few hostels in Taman Negara, Malaysia -- check the availability before traveling if you are coming here in high season.
