We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Echternach.
Echternach, Luxembourg, is the oldest city in Luxembourg and has a beautiful Medieval history. But it isn't just the buildings in this area that have stunning beauty. The nature is to die for and you can take multiple hiking routes from Echternach through what is known as the Mullerthal Trail. Depending on whether you have just a few hours or a week to spend here, you can take hikes of various lengths to suit your schedule. You can find maps located around the towns and the Information Centre can also help you decide the best route to take.
You can easily get to Echternach from Luxembourg City on public transport by taking one of the buses from the city centre. It should take you an hour to get there, and it's inexpensive. There are a couple of different buses that come here, and the schedules vary depending on whether it is a weekday or weekend, but there should be a schedule available online.
While you are in the town of Echternach itself, there is a small square that has some beautiful architectural features. Behind this is the main abbey, which is worth a look. The inside of the church is very beautiful and understated. You can also take a walk out to Echternach Lake; it is quite pretty and there is a trail to walk around it. There is a Echternach, Luxembourg hostel located right next to the lake, so if you wanted to spend more time around this area you can. It is within walking distance of the town and all of the amenities, but it does take a while to get there. Other hostels in Echternach, Luxembourg, will be more central, though none of the Echternach, Luxembourg hostels is really too far away from the attractions and amenities.
There are a few supermarkets a short distance from the main square that have reasonably priced food (for the area) where you can save money. All of the basic amenities you will need you can find here, but unless you are planning on doing some long hikes over a couple of days, you shouldn't need more than a day here.
