Wakkanai, Japan is the northernmost city in Japan and the capital of Soya Subprefecture in Japan. Located on the second largest Japanese island Hokkaido, the city has a population of roughly thirty-seven thousand. The name of the city can be literally translated as "cold water river," referring to the cool climate. The history of the city dates back to the seventeenth century; Wakkanai was established as a frontier trading post to the Ainu people, who originally settled much of Hokkaido. Trading is still important for the local economy and trading ties with Russia slowly increase.

You can get there by car, bus, plane or train. Wakkanai Aiport (in Japanese, Wakkanai Kuku), is situated ten kilometres east of the city. The size of the facility and the numbers of passengers using the airport is small. National flight links to bigger cities such as Sapporo and Tokyo are available. The train JR Soya Honsen connects Wakkanai to Asahikawa. Make sure that you get off at the right stop, since there are two stations in the city, Wakkanai and Minami-Wakk. If you prefer a cheap bus, there are regular connections between Wakkanai and Sapporo.

Even if you come in summer, do not forget to bring a jacket. The average maximum temperature is around twenty degrees Celsius during the day. At night the temperatures can drop to ten degrees Celsius or even lower if you visit the region in June.

Many hotels are clustered in the Hokai district. You can also find some guesthouses and hostels in Wakkanai, Japan, if you want to spend some days there. However, the number of inexpensive places such as Wakkanai, Japan hostels is limited. Cleanliness and politeness are very important in Japan; therefore, most accommodations -- including the hostel in Wakkanai, Japan -- are very clean and the staff are very friendly.

Northeast of Wakkanai, you can find Cape Soya, Japan's northernmost point. At this cape, the so-called Sōya Misaki in Japanese, you can find the Northernmost Point Monument engraved with accomplishments and the statue of Mamyia Rinzo, a famous Japanese explorer. If you are interested in architecture, do not miss the odd-looking breakwater dome. This structure is four hundred twenty-seven metres long and thirteen metres high and was built in the thirties. The style is controversial but the characteristic design is part of the local history now. The smooth curves and the seventy massive supporting Roman pillars are unique and interesting for photographers.
